PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's swimming and diving team picked up 15 top-three finishes in the pool and on the boards on Saturday afternoon against Tulane, and perhaps the biggest came from a freshman diver.
Samantha Cochrane, a native of San Diego, California, set the program's freshman record in the 3-meter diving event, scoring a 269.55 that bested the previous record of 258.70 set earlier this year by her teammate
Francesca Vozzola.
UWF ultimately fell to Tulane 153-88, but Argonauts put together strong swims throughout the day and again stood out in both diving events.
"I'm really thrilled with today's effort," head coach
Andrew Hancock said. "We went up against a major opponent and competed hard and we didn't back down. We've got some more work to do, and we're looking forward to the next couple of weeks before we head to Tallahassee."
Cochrane's score also earned her a spot in the NCAA Diving Qualifier in the 3-meter, and she took one of 15 top-three finishes on the day for UWF in the 1-meter event.
Madeline Pitt and
Taby Read-Cayton also picked up event wins on the day, with Pitt claiming the 1,000 Free and Read-Cayton winning the 50 Free. Pitt's time of 10:28.87 cleared the field by almost seven seconds, and Read-Cayton's 24.34 in the 50 put her almost a half-second ahead of Tulane's Kaitlin Simpson.
Grace Sommerville earned two second-place finishes on the day, going 10:35.22 in the 1,000 Free – good for the fourth-fastest time in that event in school history – and clocking a 5:11.22 in the 500 Free, where Pitt finished less than a second behind her in fourth place. And
Danica Burnett picked up another top three for West Florida in the 50 Free, coming in at 25.05.
UWF freshmen recorded three more second-place swims on Saturday, one of which was
Ardinn Grabenhorst swimming a 1:00.32 in the 100 Fly, where she was closely followed by
Hannah O'Toole's 1:00.84.
Caitlin Tierney and
Morgan Ayers showed out in their respective events as well, taking second in the 100 Free and the 100 Breast, respectively. Ayers nearly had a win but was just out-touched by Olivia Johnson of Tulane, with a 1:06.53. Tierney took second in the 100 Free and fourth in the 200 Free, swimming 53.51 and 1:55.43 – times that were each within a second of
Danica Burnett's freshman records in both events.
The top UWF finisher in the 1-meter was
Carson Bronnenberg, who threw together a second-place finish with a 212.53, just six points shy of her personal best and two points within her season-best 214.30.
Mariah Constantakos finished third in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter, scoring a 194.32 and a 229.80 in those events, respectively.
UWF is back in action on November 4 with a meet at Florida State along with Florida Southern and North Florida.
