PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF softball team had nine hits but was unable to get the big one when it needed it, falling to Mississippi College 5-1 in the rubber game of a three-game series at the UWF Softball Complex Sunday.
The Argos (9-3, 1-2 Gulf South) left nine runners on base with five of those in scoring position.
Mississippi College (8-6, 2-1) finished with 12 hits, including a 2-run home run from Makenzie Nieto in the fifth inning that put the Lady Choctaws ahead 5-1.
UWF was led by
Meghan Toney offensively as she went 3-for-4 and reached base four times to extend her hitting streak to eight games. She also had a pair of stolen bases to improve to 8-for-8 on the year.
Rhiannon Sassman collected a pair of hits and scored the game's first run when she cross home on a
Jacey Castro sacrifice fly.
But that was all the scoring UWF could get for starter
Becca Taylor (5-2), who allowed three runs – one unearned – on six hits with a strikeout in four innings.
MC took the lead in the third inning with two runs on three hits. Megan Everett hit a 2-out triple to right center and scored a batter later on Tylan Buckley's single. Buckey came around to score when she moved to third on a single up the middle from Kristen Qualls and scored when the throw to third went into the third base dugout.
The Lady Choctaws plated their third run of the contest in the fourth when Alexia Harmon led off and reached on an error. She then made her way around the bases with a single, sac bunt and sac fly.
Penny Nichols (4-2) earned the complete game victory as she struck out two and walked two while scattering nine hits. Everett, Nieto, Qualls, Carly Crawford and Katherine Lee each finished with two hits for MC.
