PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's swimming and diving team won six events and celebrated Senior Day in a back-and-forth meet against Georgia Southern at the UWF Aquatic Center on Saturday.
 
UWF freshmen Caitlin Tierney and Morgan Ayers combined to win four events. Tierney continued her strong performances in the freestyle, touching first in the 200 and 100, while Ayers broke through to sweep the breaststroke events, winning the 100 and 200 by three seconds each.
 
"We were pleased with Caitlyin winning two events because she's had a couple of close calls and almost pulled a few out the last few weeks and Morgan's been leading by example the whole way through," UWF head coach Andrew Hancock said. 
 
Seniors Madeline Pitt, Grace Sommerville, Danica Burnett, Sophia Oliva and Madison Gilbert were honored prior to the meet and celebrated during their events.
 
Pitt won the 1000 free and was runner-up in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Sommerville was second in the 1000 free, while grabbing second place in the 500 free and third in the 200 fly. Burnett was part of two runner-up relays in addition to a third in the 100 free and a fourth in the 50 free.
 
"It was a fantastic sendoff for (our five seniors)," Hancock added. "We wanted to pull that one out for them today but came up a tiny bit short. It was great to see our athletes compete hard and take a very good, mid-major Division I program down to the last event.
 
"We are really pleased and excited to see what happens next and we are hopefully we can give them a better sendoff in a few weeks."

Freshmen divers Samantha Cochrane and Jesstina Farrell were the top two finishers in the 3-meter competition, while classmate Francesca Vozzola was fourth. Farrell also took second in the 1-meter later in the meet.
 
The Eagles claimed a 163-137 win on Saturday, using a top three sweep in the 100 fly (the 13th event of 16) and followed with first and thirds in both the 1-meter diving and 200 IM to create the necessary space for the victory.
 
"We've got some great talent and are looking forward to what the team can do with a little added preparation and rest at the end of the year," Hancock said.
 
UWF concludes the dual meet portion of the 2017-18 season with an 8-4 record. The Argonauts will now turn their focus to the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships, set for Feb. 21-24 in Cleveland, Miss.
