Argos Complete Sweep Over West Georgia

West Florida moves into third in the Gulf South Conference with the win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – With a 7-3 win over West Georgia on Saturday afternoon, the 17th-ranked University of West Florida softball team completed a weekend sweep and moved into third place in the Gulf South Conference standings. UWF now stands at 21-11 overall with a 12-7 record.

The Argonauts got a strong start from Grace Gilbert, who also went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI and leads UWF with a .442 batting average this year. Gilbert threw her third complete game of the season and earned her team-best seventh win and lowered her season ERA to 2.32, which ranks eighth in the GSC.

Callan Taylor doubled down the left field line in the first inning to drive in Jibrasha Moore and Meghan Toney to give UWF a 2-0 lead, and the Argos would never lead by fewer than two runs. Taylor led UWF with five runs scored, four RBIs and an .875 slugging percentage over the weekend, and she has hit .467 with three home runs and 15 RBIs over her last 10 games.

Tori Perkins added an RBI with a single up the middle to score Taylor just three batters later, marking her first hit of the day and putting West Florida ahead 3-0. It was also her 11th RBI in the month of March, a total that ranks third on the team during the month.

After UWG picked up a run in the top of the second, Kathleen Smiley drove in Mika Garcia with a single to stretch the Argonauts lead to 4-1. She led UWF in the month of March with a .484 batting average and a .590 on-base percentage, while walking eight times and striking out only once.

Rachel Wright and Garcia helped add three more runs in the fourth inning singles. Wright singled to left field to score Gilbert, and a hard line drive off the glove of shortstop Alley Taylor turned into a two-run single for Garcia to finish off the scoring.

The game wrapped up another strong offensive weekend for the Argonauts, who hit .365 and averaged nine runs per game and went a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base tries. UWF also drew 17 walks and struck out just 6 times in the series, while posting a .470 on-base percentage.

UWF is back on the road next weekend for a series at Lee in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Saturday and Sunday.
