PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 15th-ranked University of West Florida softball team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Spring Hill. UWF (25-14) got five innings of one-hit ball from
Tori Perkins in the circle, and Perkins delivered the game-winning home run in the fourth inning as well.
Perkins improved to 5-4 on the year after throwing five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.
Sarah Maloney came in to relieve Perkins in the sixth inning and struck out three over the final two innings of the game, earning her first save of the year.
UWF cashed in on some timely hitting as well, with a sacrifice fly from shortstop
Kara Wilson in the second inning to score
Tiona Hill and tie the game at 1-1. From there, it was all UWF, with Perkins hitting the game-winning home run in the fourth inning – her third round-tripper of the year.
Following the home run, Perkins and Maloney allowed just two runners to reach base and UWF used a two-run sixth inning to stretch the lead. Wilson singled down the left field line to score pinch-runner
Harley Tagert and pick up her first multi-RBI game of the season, and
Jacquelynne Poling capped off the scoring with an RBI double into the left-center gap that scored Wilson, making it 4-3.
UWF tallied four extra-base hits, with
Kathleen Smiley,
Grace Gilbert and Poling recording doubles to go along with Perkins' home run. Additionally, Smiley walked twice and reached base a game-high three times.
West Florida will visit Montevallo for a three-game Gulf South Conference series beginning on Saturday afternoon.
