No. 15 UWF Falls in Series Finale at Montevallo

Argos tally 12 hits in the loss

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Florida softball team and Montevallo traded leads all throughout Sunday's series finale, but the Argonauts ultimately fell in a 5-4 heartbreaker after a three-run sixth inning from the Falcons. West Florida is now in sixth place in the Gulf South Conference standings at 16-12, and the Argonauts hold a 26-16 overall record.

Sophomore right fielder Jibrasha Moore led all players with three hits, and Sunday marked her first career three-hit game. Meghan Toney and Tori Perkins had two hits apiece, and one of Perkins' was her fourth home run of the year.

Montevallo struck first, when Haley Barnette stole second and Brianna Stella came around on the throw, but the Falcons would not hold the lead for long. In the second, Perkins hit her solo shot to even the score, and Callan Taylor drove in Moore with a double to the right-center field gap to give West Florida its first lead of the morning.

Barnette evened it back up in the bottom of the third with a single to bring around Kelsey Vining, but a single from Toney in the fifth scored Rachel Wright to put UWF back on top 3-2.

After starting pitcher Grace Gilbert helped her own cause in the sixth with an RBI single to right field, the three-run bottom of the sixth for Montevallo put the Falcons ahead 5-4. That inning spoiled an otherwise-quality start from Gilbert, who allowed just five hits and two runs over the first five innings of the game.

The Argonauts threatened again in the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles from Moore and Toney, but near-perfect throws to the plate from Montevallo left fielder Darbi Duke spelled the end of the UWF rally and finished off the game.

UWF will face Florida Southern in a neutral-site doubleheader in Tallahassee, Florida, on Tuesday.
