FLORENCE, Ala. –
Kara Wilson delivered a single through the left side of the infield to score
Harley Tagert and finish off the University of West Florida softball team's comeback, walk-off win over Delta State in the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Friday morning. With the win, UWF improved to 30-19 for the year and advanced into the third round of the tournament, where the Argonauts will face Mississippi College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The win on Friday also gave UWF 30 wins for the 27th time in the program's 32-year history.
Wilson's was the last of several timely hits the Argonauts used to rally back from a 4-0 deficit after the first inning, and the UWF got to work on that deficit immediately. After
Jibrasha Moore drew a leadoff walk and stole second,
Meghan Toney ripped a double down the left field line to cut the score to 4-1.
West Florida scored again in the second, cashing in on a pair of defensive miscues by Delta State.
Tiona Hill reached on a throwing error by third baseman Marissa Landrum, and
Jacquelynne Poling put a single into right field that was misplayed by Mallory Myers, allowing Hill to score from first and getting Poling to third with no outs.
Hill started another quick rally in the third when she singled up the middle to start the inning.
Mika Garcia dropped a bunt single down to put a pair of runners on base for
Rachel Wright. Some heads up baserunning from Hill put her on third, when DSU catcher Carlie Vice tried to pick Garcia off first and Hill made a perfect read to advance. Just two pitches later, Wright lifted a fly ball into right field and scored Hill, making the score 4-3.
An inning later, Wright made a catch at the wall on a fly ball from Vice, saving an extra-base hit that would have put Vice in scoring position with just one out.
Garcia tied the game 4-4 in the sixth inning with her second home run of the year, lifting a solo shot into dead center field for UWF's first home run of the weekend.
An inning later,
Callan Taylor was hit by a pitch to put a runner on with one out. Tagert pinch-ran for Taylor and advanced to second on a grounder from Hill. Wilson then drove in Tagert with a pinch-hit single to end the game and give UWF the 5-4 win.
After giving up four runs in the top of the first, UWF starter
Sarah Maloney settled in and dominated the rest of the way. The senior allowed just four baserunners over her final six innings of work, giving up just four hits and striking out three. From the second to the fifth inning, Maloney was as dialed in as ever, retiring 10 consecutive batters.
Maloney improved to 10-5 for the year, giving her double-digit wins for the second consecutive season.
West Florida will face Mississippi College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the third round of the tournament.
