UWF Rallies Late to Sweep Delta State

Sophomore Angela Agurkis ties game with home run in the sixth inning

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team finished off a sweep over Delta State on Sunday afternoon, taking a 4-2 victory to improve to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the Gulf South Conference. The Argonauts finished the weekend batting .418, averaging 9.7 runs per game, and pitching to a 0.39 ERA.

Freshman pitcher Megan Warhurst pitched a gem of a game on the way to her fourth win of the year. She struck out seven batters over six innings, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs against the Lady Statesmen.

The rookie from Russellville, Alabama, has now thrown 11.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, and leads the GSC in opponent batting average (.120) while ranking third in ERA (1.34).

Junior pitcher Kelsey Sweatt entered the game in the seventh and needed just 12 pitches to retire DSU in order, earning her third save of the season.

DSU took a 1-0 lead on an attempted double steal in the first, and a single to center from Jaclyn Deason in the sixth inning made it 2-0.

The Argonaut bats were a bit slow to start, with just one hit through five innings, but they came alive in the bottom of the sixth.

Teala Howard led off the inning with a double to left field, advanced to third on a fly ball from Grace Gilbert, and scored on a single up the middle from Mika Garcia, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Just a batter later, sophomore Angela Agurkis tied the game at 2-2 with a moonshot over the left field fence – her second home run of the season.

The rally continued with singles from Ally Merrill and Kara Wilson, putting a pair of runners on with two away. West Florida then got back-to-back RBI hits from Courtney McLellan and Callan Taylor to give UWF the 4-2 lead. From there, Sweatt finished off the Lady Statesmen with two popouts and a strikeout.

The series marked UWF's best offensive week of the year. The Argonauts slugged .646 as a team, with 12 extra-base hits over three games, and 10 players hit .400 or higher.

After batting .700 (7-10) over the weekend, Teala Howard leads the GSC with 31 hits, and Gilbert ranks second with 27 hits. Howard also leads the league in runs scored (25), and Gilbert is second in the conference with 23 RBIs.

UWF will have a busy week coming up. The Argonauts face Palm Beach Atlantic in a doubleheader on Tuesday and Christian Brothers in a doubleheader on Thursday, before hosting West Georgia for a weekend series next Saturday and Sunday.
