Argos blank UT Tyler in Sunday Matinee

Win 5 of 6 matches in straight sets

PENSACOLA, Fla.- Playing at home for the second time in three Sundays, the seventh ranked UWF women's tennis team dominated UT Tyler by a final of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

The wins boost the Argo women to 7-1 while the lady Patriots fall to 3-6.

Even with a sizable margin of victory, West Florida head coach Derrick Racine knows that the Argos can take away a lot from the match.  "Although UT Tyler is not a regional opponent, they are well known for having strong programs every year", Racine noted.  "The individual scores of the matches were much closer than the overall score and it was a good test for us at home and a good way to end the first half of the season prior to spring break."

UWF started fast as the women were led by Berta Bonardi and Lais Bicca as they romped 6-0 in doubles to lead the charge.  The duos of Karolina Silwanowicz and Gabriela Araujo plus Manon Meulenberg and Irene Recuenco completed the sweep.

The ladies completed their day as they finished all but one of their singles' matches in two sets.  No.1 ranked Bonardi made easy work of her opponent with a final of 6-0, 6-1 which matched the score of Silwanowicz who scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the #4 spot.  Meulenberg and senior Araujo had equal 6-2, 6-2 wins while Recuenco also rebounded from yesterday with a 6-3, 6-0 final.  Graduate Senior Samantha Echevarria closed out the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 score in the #6 spot.

Overall, it was a good weekend for the Argos as they also defeated fifth-ranked Saint Leo yesterday.  "Saturday's match was a huge one for us on the women's side", Racine continued.  "The match against Saint Leo was super important for regional seedings and post season match-ups.  To fight and scrape out a 4-3 win showed a lot of grit and character from our players.

The girls will get a couple days of practice before traveling to San Antonio for a Spring Break Tournament on Friday, March 13th to March 15th, which Racine knows will be tough.  "This week we are heading to San Antonio on a high note with the ladies getting big wins and we hope they continue that momentum into next week."
