Men’s Tennis Picks up Another Tough Win Over Conference Foe Lee

Argos rely on bottom half of lineup to secure the win

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – It was yet again another tight match for the Argonauts against Lee today, but once again they were able to do enough to come out on top. After securing the lone doubles point, UWF went on to win 4 out of the 6 singles points to help them improve to 2-0 on the year.

Once again it was Sedar Bojadjiev and Adam Svennson starting thing off for UWF in doubles winning 6-1 as the No. 1 doubles pair. Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob paired up to play from the No. 3 position, however, they were unable to best Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi leaving the doubles portion in the hands of Gabriel Nery and Salvador Bandeira. In a back and forth match Nery and Bandeira were ultimately able to pull through securing the 7-5 victory and the doubles point.

"Doubles was very intense," stated Head Coach Derrick Racine, "it came down to a comeback win at the No. 2 position to clinch the point".

With the doubles point secured, it was now up to the singles portion to determine a winner. Lecoutre was the first to finish winning 6-2, 6-2 over Antonio Pons. The next two matches to finish up were Bandeira who won 6-4, 6-2, and Bojadjiev who fell 4-6, 7-6, 3-6 to Diego Garcia from the No. 1 position.

With the lead now 3-1, West Florida now only needed one more point from the bottom half of their lineup to secure the overall victory. Juan Cabrera after clinching the match yesterday against AUM was back at it again today winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to ensure the victory. In the remaining two matches Juan Motta dropped a close match to Cristian Pons 6-1, 6-7, 3-6 while Nery picked up his first singles win of the season winning 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 over Bruno Medeiros.

"In singles every match was very close," says Coach Racine. "We lost a couple tight 3 set matches but also won a couple 3 set matches. The key to today's match win was the big straight set victories by Lecoutre and Bandeira, who refused to give any free points and played the big points really well."

Tomorrow marks the end of the season-opening road trip for the Argos as they will face Shorter in Rome, Ga. at 10 AM (ET) looking to stay undefeated.
