Men’s Tennis Drops Tough Match to the Seahawks

Final two points of the match decided by third-set tiebreakers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a heartbreaking start to the homestand for the West Florida Men's Tennis team as they fall 4-3 to Keiser University. As the first of seven straight home matches for the Argos, the action sure didn't disappoint with the final two points of the match being decided in third-set tiebreakers.

Starting with doubles, the Argonauts came out and set the tone early on picking up the lone doubles point with wins across the lineup.

Salvador Bandeira and Gabriel Nery teamed up from the No. 1 doubles position today and continued their excellence winning 6-3 to improve to 7-0 as a pairing on the year. Lluis Miralles Miro teamed up with Sedar Bojadjiev from the No. 2 position to secure the lone doubles point with a 6-1 win in their match. Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob closed things out for the Argos winning 7-6 from the
No. 3 position to get the clean sweep on the day.

"We came out very good in doubles," Head Coach Derrick Racine noted. "We've been really strong all year in doubles and have four really good teams that we can pair together. Lluis stepped up today and played very well at the No. 2 doubles with Sed as they cruised in their match."

Singles play saw great back-and-forth action from both teams with Keiser taking two quick points to jump in the lead before the Argos fought back to win two themselves.

Bojadjiev was unable to take down Toru Horie of Keiser from the No. 1 position as he fell 4-6, 3-6 in his match. After a very close first set, Bandeira was unable to fight back in set two and dropped his match 5-7, 1-6 from the No. 2 position. Nery was the next to finish picking up a 6-4, 6-3 victory from the No. 6 position to get UWF back on track. Then it was Juan Cabrera playing from the No. 5 position winning a huge match 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to put the Argos back ahead.

With the score now 3-2 in favor of the Argonauts, it was now up to Lecoutre and Juan Motta to pick up one more point to close it out, however, it was not the Argos day today as they both dropped hard-fought matches in tiebreakers to close things out.

After winning the first set 7-5, Lecoutre was unable to close things out in the second set and ultimately took things to the decisive third set. In a very emotional tiebreaker, Fred Oervad was able to battle back for Keiser and pick up the win from the No. 3 position. In similar fashion, Motta picked up the first set win before dropping the second set and ultimately the tiebreaker to give Keiser the 4-3 victory.

"Match three and four came down to the wire," said Coach Racine. "We were up in both of those matches, had match points and didn't close them. It hurts a little bit, but we will learn from it and continue to get better every match."

West Florida now has a day off to rest before coming back on Sunday to take on the #3 ranked NAIA team in Xavier (La.) on Sunday from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The match will begin at 10 AM and as always be sure to follow along on social media for updates on the match.
