CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Florida Women's Tennis team returned to Gulf South Conference play today and picked up a dominant 6-1 victory over Delta State. The Argonauts now sit at 7-3 on the season and improve to 4-0 in the conference with the win today.
In what was their first match in over a week as well as their first road match since February, the Argonauts did a fantastic job adjusting a picking up the win today.
It was doubles where the Argonauts started their dominance today securing victories from all three positions to put West Florida ahead moving into singles play.
Berta Bonardi and partner
Sara Yigin got back to their winning ways as a pairing winning 6-1 from the No. 1 position.
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Samantha Echevarria followed suit from the No. 2 position winning 6-2 to clinch the doubles victory.
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner teamed up for the first time this season and pulled out a 7-6 victory from the No. 3 position to sweep the doubles portion for the Argonauts.
Singles play saw this momentum carry over for West Florida as they secured wins in five of the six matches to close out the victory on the day.
Bonardi playing from the No. 1 position showed why she is ranked as the No. 1 player in the nation winning 6-0, 6-0 from her match. Recuenco was able to win in similar fashion from the No. 2 position coming out with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The No. 3, 4, and 5 positions each all won in straight sets as well to push the Argonauts ahead in this one.
"The singles were all straight-set victories," Head Coach
Derrick Racine stated, "We lost a super close match from the No. 6 position, but all in all it was a great day for Argo tennis."
