VALDOSTA, Ga. – The 17th-ranked University of West Florida softball team dropped to 18-10 overall and 12-6 in Gulf South Conference play with a 10-3 loss at No. 7 Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon.
Center fielder
Kara Wilson hit a pair of home runs for UWF, driving in all three runs for the Argonauts on Sunday. Wilson's multi-homer game was the first of her career and the first for the Argonauts since 2017.
Wilson now has eight four-baggers this season – a career-high that is good for the fifth-most in the GSC. Her eight home runs are also the most for an Argonaut since Kalyn Chapman hit nine in 2016.
Two big innings late in the game for VSU spelled trouble for UWF, with a 1-1 tie through four-and-a-half innings. Home runs were the story, with six hit between the two teams in the game. VSU's Aniston Gano hit a solo roundtripper in the second inning, and Wilson followed with her first of the day in the fourth inning to tie the game.
VSU got ahead in the fifth, with a six-run inning before scoring three more in the sixth. The Lady Blazers drew a pair of bases-loaded walks in the fifth before Gano hit a grand slam to stretch the lead, and VSU homered twice more in the sixth.
Freshman pitcher
Montana Young turned in a solid start, throwing four-plus innings and allowing just three hits. She struck out four batters and was ultimately charged with four runs and the loss. She is now 7-3 on the year.
Kelsey Sweatt and
Grace Gilbert each threw an inning of relief. Sweatt was charged with five runs over an inning, and Gilbert did not allow a hit in her inning of work.
West Florida will continue its road trip at Union in Jackson, Tennessee, on Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3.
