West Florida Advances to GSC Tournament Semifinals After Downing the Falcons

Argonauts have not dropped a set in the Quarterfinals since 1999

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Florida Men's Tennis team started the 2021 Gulf South Conference Tournament on a strong note Thursday, taking down Montevallo 4-0 in the Quarterfinals. This win advances the No. 2 seeded Argonauts to the Semifinals of the tournament where they will face off with the No. 3 seed Delta State tomorrow.

From today's action, West Florida pulled out a hard-fought doubles point winning in a third-set tiebreaker from the No. 1 position to clinch the lone point.

Serdar Bojadjiev and partner Lluis Miralles Miro got the Argonauts started in doubles winning 6-3 from the No. 2 position. Gabriel Nery and Salvador Bandeira, who didn't pair up when these two faced off last week, pulled out a thriller from the No. 1 position winning 7-6 (12-10) to secure West Florida's fourteenth straight doubles victory.

In the singles portion of today's match, West Florida secured victories from the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 positions to see the Argonauts advance further into the tournament.

Bojadjiev picked up his second consecutive victory over Dylan Valentine of Montevallo winning 6-3, 6-2 today from the No. 1 position. From the No. 5 position, Nery won in straight sets over Gavin Salton coming out with a 6-0, 7-5 victory in his match. Lastly, Miralles Miro won 6-0, 6-4 from the No. 6 position to remain unbeaten on the season.

While the remaining three matches all went unfinished, the Argonauts either held leads or were making second-set comebacks in each.

Nicolas Lecoutre had almost wrapped up his match from the No. 2 position as he was ahead 6-2, 6-5 when the match concluded. Juan Cabrera dropped the first set from the No. 3 position but rallied back in set two to force a decisive third set. Bandeira, like Cabrera, dropped set number one but held a 4-0 lead in set two as action concluded.
