MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In their opening match of the 2021 Gulf South Conference Tournament, the West Florida Women's Tennis team took down Christian Brothers 4-0 to begin postseason play with a statement. With the victory, the Argonauts now advance to the Semifinals of the GSC Tournament and will take on the No. 3 seed Mississippi College tomorrow.
From today's match, West Florida took care of business in doubles play winning from the top two spots and leading from the No. 3 position before it went unfinished. This is now nine straight matches that the Argonauts have won the lone point which dates all the way back to late March.
Berta Bonardi and
Sara Yigin were back together as a pair today and handed Amaro and Guemes of Christian Brothers their first loss of the season. Winning 6-1 on the day, Bonardi and Yigin showed why they were ranked as the No. 5 pair in the nation with their dominant performance today. The other doubles victory on the day came from
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Samantha Echevarria who 6-0 from the No. 2 position. They have now won their past eight doubles matches in a row.
Irene Recuenco and
Mayumi Saguchi had their match go unfinished from the No. 3 position as the Argonauts had already secured the lone point. However, the two had built a solid 5-2 lead and were playing well for West Florida.
In singles, the Argonauts picked up wins from the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 positions to put them over the top and secure the victory on the afternoon.
Silwanowicz, playing from the No. 3 position, got the Argonauts started winning her match 6-0, 6-2 on the day. Saguchi earned her third victory today taking down Nellina Wooten 6-0, 6-3 from the No. 6 position. The final point of the day came from the No. 4 position as Yigin won 6-3, 6-2 to secure the win for West Florida.
While the remaining three matches all went unfinished, the Argonauts either held leads in each or were ahead in the second set when the match wrapped up.
Bonardi who was facing fellow Co-Player of the Year in the GSC dropped her first set 1-6 but was ahead 4-1 in set number two. Recuenco had won her first set from the No. 2 position and was tied 3-3 in set two. Lastly,
Raissa Wagner dropped set one from her match as well but held a 3-1 lead in set two when competition ended.
Information for the Semifinal – West Florida now advances in the GSC Tournament and will take on Mississippi College tomorrow in a Semifinal match. Scouting Mississippi College – The Lady Choctaws enter Friday's matchup as the No. 3 seed after going 8-6 during the regular season. In their opening match, Mississippi College took down Lee 4-1 to advance to the semifinals.
This will be the second meeting between these two this season as they squared off on April 11, in Pensacola, Florida. In this previous matchup, West Florida came out with a 6-1 win after winning the doubles point and from five out of the six singles positions on the day.
Friday's winner will move to the Championship match scheduled for Saturday where they will face off with the winner of the Auburn Montgomery and West Alabama match which is tomorrow also.
