Argonauts Move onto NCAA South Regional Championship After Taking Down West Alabama

West Florida will now face the No. 1 seed Barry in tomorrow’s championship match

PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the first time since the NCAA Finals run in 2018, the West Florida Women's Tennis team will move on to the South Regional Championship to try to play their way into the NCAA Finals in Surprise, Arizona. The Argonauts were able to take care of business today taking down the No. 2 seeded West Alabama 4-1 to advance to tomorrow's championship match.

After falling to the Tigers in doubles just a few weeks ago in the GSC Tournament, the Argonauts came out with new life today and won from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to win the lone point.

Karolina Silwanowicz and partner Samantha Echevarria were the first to wrap up from the No. 2 position winning 6-1 in their match. The decisive victory came from Irene Recuenco and Mayumi Saguchi from the No. 3 spot as they won 6-4 to give the Argonauts the advantage heading into singles.

"We knew the key to today's match would be the doubles," Head Coach Derrick Racine stated. "We played much better than what we did at the conference tournament and won some key points at key times to win doubles".

In singles, it was a very evenly matched affair as all but two matches went to a decisive third set with the Argonauts ultimately winning from the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 positions to win the match.

Berta Bonardi was dominant as ever from the No. 1 spot for the Argonauts as she took down No. 44 ranked Sarah Manseri 6-0, 6-1 in her match. Sara Yigin was the other Argonaut to wrap up her match in straight sets as she won 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 4 position. The final point for West Florida came from the No. 6 position as Mayumi Saguchi continued her success winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 for her sixth straight win.

"Once again we knew singles would be highly contested and would come down to many third set matches," Coach Racine noted. "Berta won handily from the No. 1 position while Sara won a great straight-set victory from the No. 4 position. Mayumi pulled out an epic three-set victory to give us the win. I am super proud of the girls to rebound after a tough loss a few weeks ago and it showed a lot of spirit and fight from all of them".

West Florida will now advance to tomorrow's championship match to face No. 1 seed Barry who took down St. Leo in their match today. First serve will be at 1 PM (CST) from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

Once again tomorrow's match will feature a live video stream as well as live scoring so if you can't make it out to the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex be sure to tune in online.
