PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was all Argonauts in today's NCAA South Regional Semifinal as the West Florida Men's Tennis team took down No. 2 seed Valdosta State 4-1 to advance to tomorrow's championship match. This was the first victory over the Blazers all season for West Florida and it couldn't have come at a better time as they keep their season alive and advance to tomorrow's championship match.
West Florida started the day with some great doubles play picking up wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to give the Argonauts the one-point lead heading into singles.
Salvador Bandeira and partner
Gabriel Nery took down the No. 5 ranked pair in Nguyen/Simbozel 6-2 from the No. 1 position to get the Argonauts started. Nearly at the same time,
Lluis Miralles Miro and
Serdar Bojadjiev won 6-1 from the No. 2 doubles position to secure the lone point.
Nicolas Lecoutre and
William Shkrob held a 5-4 lead from the No. 3 doubles position before it went unfinished due to the Argonauts securing two victories.
"It was an amazing match today," Head Coach
Derrick Racine stated. "We started really well in doubles with the guys playing very free and showing some great fight. After we clinched doubles I knew we would have our work cut out for us as they are very strong from every singles position".
In singles, the momentum carried over as West Florida relied on great play from the top portion of their lineup to clinch the victory in today's match.
Bojadjiev, who has now won his last six, took down No. 5 ranked Yohan Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 1 position for West Florida's second point. Next to finish was
Juan Cabrera who remained unbeaten on the year taking down No. 35 ranked Christian Wedel 6-0, 7-5 from the No. 3 position. The final point for the Argonauts came from
Juan Motta who won 6-4, 6-1 from the No. 4 position to clinch the match for West Florida.
"Serdar just keeps getting better and better each week and is really playing on top of his game," Coach Racine noted. "
Juan Cabrera has been great all year and pulled out a super tough point.
Juan Motta stepped up today in his first match in three weeks and played probably his best match of the entire year. It was a great team effort and the guys are very pumped for tomorrow's final".
The Argonauts will now take on Barry who advanced to the championship match today by taking down St. Leo 4-1 in their match. First serve in tomorrow's championship match will be at 10 AM (CST) with the Women's championship to immediately follow.
