No. 10 West Florida Travels to Birmingham for Second Meet

This is the 13th meeting between these two teams

PENSACOLA, Fla.-
The No. 10 West Florida Swimming and Diving Team will be back in action in Birmingham for their second meet of the season. The meet will take place at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Argonauts come into this meet ranked No. 10 in the CSCAA Poll and look to pick up right where they left off as they head to Alabama.

About UWF
In late September, UWF won their first meet of the 2022-23 season over Thomas (174-23), Loyola (174-58), and South Georgia State (174-20). The Argonauts had an impressive meet as they finished first in eleven events.

The group of Morgan Mangum, Brooke Simila, Emily O'Connell, and Brooke Dorr won the women's 200 freestyle relay. With a time of 1:48.60, the Argonauts dropped 2.01 seconds off their time. The other UWF team came in second with a time of 1:49.59 with Anna Jaworski, Ellie Rothfuss, Stefanie Markwardt, and Aimee Patterson.

Standout Markwardt made a splash in the pool with a first-place finish in the 100 fly (56.61) and 50 free (23.83).

On the boards, Adriana Sanchez-Mieses made her collegiate debut in the first meet of the season with a NCAA Qualifying Score on the 1-meter (255.2).

In the Moultrie Diving Invite, the Argonauts made a statement finishing first in both events and winning the meet with 30 points, Birmingham-Southern came in second with 10, and Berry College finished third with one.

UWF has already qualified four divers for the NCAA Qualifying Meet in March including Sanchez-Mises, Fontenelle, Reyes, and Michelle Mejia. Freshman Jade Fontenelle finished first on the 1-meter boards (438.52) and second on the 3-meter boards (224.10).

Another freshman standout Olivia Nelson placed first in the 3-meter competition (236.32).

About Birmingham-Southern
The Panthers are tabbed No. 2 in the SAA Women's Preseason Poll for the 2022-23 season. BSC is coming off their sixth consecutive SAA Swim & Dive title after winning the Championship last year. 

At the SAA Championships, senior Mary Miller Goldberg finished second for BSC in the 1650 free with a time of 18.02.56 and second in the 200 fly with 2:09.40.

The top-3 individuals for BSC were Callie West (60), Adeline Carroll (60), and Mary-Louise LeMieux (57).

UWF vs. BSC History
The last time these two teams faced off was in late January of 2022. UWF won the meet 232-61 with the Argos finishing first in 16 events.

West Florida finished top three in the 100 fly with senior Markwardt coming in first (1:08.68), Kathryn Mipro in second (1:09.96), and Mikayla Puckett in third (1:11.59). Dorr touched first in the 200 free with 1:56.53.

Danieli dominated the long-distance events as she picked up two wins in the 1000 free (10:50) and 200 breast (2:13.25).

The Argonauts put top two on the 1-meter boards with Gabriela McDougall in first (237.50) followed by Elizabeth Bened in second (182.25).
