PENSACOLA, Fla.- The #12 West Florida Men's Tennis Team secured a huge win over the top-ranked #6 Valdosta State on Tuesday morning, winning in a close match 4-3. This moves the Argos to a season record of 11-2 and gives them a Gulf South Conference record of 4-1. The Argonauts continue to remain undefeated at home on the season and first in GSC standings.
"Over the past 25 years, it's been back-and-forth between West Florida and Valdosta on the conference and national level. We started out both matches with the doubles point which again proved to be the key to the match as we won both matches 4-3," stated head coach
Derrick Racine.
Once again, the match started bright and early for the Argos, the match was pushed up to 9 AM due to weather conditions. However, this was no problem for West Florida as they came out and immediately dominated the match in doubles play. Salvador Bandeira and teammate
Albin Ekenros carried the momentum for the Argonauts, winning their match 6-2 from the No. 2 position.

Bernardo Costa fell from the No. 3 position 4-6, 4-6 against a tough Blazers opponent.
In the bottom half of the lineup, Bandeira secured the final point for the Argonauts, winning his match 6-4, 6-3. Descarrega and Ekrenros both played tough matches from the No. 4 and No. 6 position, but they both fell in a tiebreaker. From the No. 4 position, Descarrega dropped the first set 6-7, won the second set 6-2, but dropped the third 5-7 after dealing with an injury. Ekenros dominated the first set 6-4, lost the second 4-6, and finally dropped the third 4-6.
The Argonauts were able to hold onto the victory, winning the match 4-3 against a tough Valdosta State team.
After the match, Racine said, "We split each of the singles three and three and they were like where a lot of three set match were on the men's side and the women's side. It's a long season and we will most likely have to face them again in conference or Nationals -but this is a really good milestone to gauge as to how we're progressing this season. I am super happy with both team's performance."
West Florida Men's Tennis will return on Wednesday for another home match against Ouachita Baptist at 1 PM.
