West Florida Clinch Huge Win Over the Blazers

The Argonauts win the match 4-3

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The West Florida Women's Tennis Team secured a huge win over Valdosta State on Tuesday morning, winning in a close match 4-3. This moves the Argos to a season record of 8-5 and gives them a Gulf South Conference record of 4-1. The Blazers fall to 4-7 on the season.

Once again, the match started bright and early for the Argos, the match was pushed up to 9 AM due to weather conditions. However, this was no problem for West Florida as they came out and immediately dominated the match in doubles play. The Argos secured two out of the three doubles matches to secure the lone point for the Argos.

"Over the past 25 years, it's been back-and-forth between West Florida and Valdosta on the conference and national level. We started out both matches with the doubles point which again proved to be the key to the match as we won both matches 4-3," stated head coach Derrick Racine.

Mayumi Saguchi and Sara Yigin teamed up from the No. 2 position and continued their hot streak, winning the match 6-2. Raissa Wagner and her partner Irene Recuenco dominated from the No. 3 position, winning their match 6-2 as well.

Nathalia Mssambani and Karolina Silwanowicz dropped their match in a close one 3-6 from the No. 1 position. The Argos still had the lead heading into singles play.

Singles play saw West Florida continue the momentum from doubles with four players winning the first set of their matches and securing the victory from three singles matches.

From the top of the lineup, Yigin and Saguchi weren't able to come out ahead in their match with Yigin falling 3-6, 3-6 from the No. 1 position and Saguchi dropping her match in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2, 0-4 to the Blazers.

Recuenco secured the first point in singles for the Argos, winning her match in two straight sets 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 2 position.
The remaining three matches were close matches and the Argos held strong positions in all of them. Mossambani secures the next point for the Argos, winning her match 6-4, 6-2. Silwanowicz got the next point, dominating from the No. 6 position 6-1, 6-2.

Wagner put up a tough fight from the No. 4 position, but wasn't able to secure the point for the Argos, she dropped her match in a tiebreaker 6-2, 4-6, 0-6. The Argonauts were able to ensure the victory 4-3 to improve their home record to 7-1 on the season.

After the match, Racine said, "We split each of the singles three and three and they were like where a lot of three set match were on the men's side and the women's side. It's a long season and we will most likely have to face them again in conference or nationals, but this is a really good milestone to gauge as to how we're progressing this season. I am super happy with both team's performance."

West Florida will have a few days before they hit the road to play Lynn and Columbus State on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27.
