Women's Tennis Secures Win Over Christian Brothers to Advance to the GSC Semifinals

The Argos will play No. 2 seed Auburn Montgomery on Friday

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The West Florida Women's Tennis Team started the 2022 Gulf South Conference Tournament on a strong note on Thursday afternoon as the Argos swept Christian Brothers 4-0 in the quarterfinals. This win advances the No. 3 seeded Argonauts to the semifinals of the tournament on Friday afternoon where they will face the No. 2 seeded Auburn Montgomery.

UWF dominated on the courts from the beginning with two wins in doubles to secure the lone point over the Bucs.

Irene Recuenco and her partner Raissa Wagner came up with the first point as they defeated their opponent 6-2 as the No. 3 pair. The next point would come from Karolina Silwanowicz and her teammate Mayumi Saguchi would be victorious 6-4 from the No. 2 position.
Sara Yigin and Guilianna Sacco were unable to defeat the Bucs as they dropped their match 4-6 from the No. 1 position.

In the singles portion of today's match, West Florida secured victories from the No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 positions to see the Argonauts advance further into the tournament.

"Going into singles, we knew all the matches were going to be tight because when we played them earlier in the year. This time our girls performed very well and we won a lot of those matches in straight sets and got a huge win at number six from Luiza Daud, who had lost to that girl in our previous match," said head coach Derrick Racine.

Wagner would see the first singles victory for the Argos as she defeated Nellina Wooten in two straight sets 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 5 position. The next point would come from freshman Luiza Daud, who won 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 6 position. Saguchi came up with the next and last point as she defeated Beatriz Costa in two sets 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 3 position.

While the remaining three matches all went unfinished, the Argonauts held the leads or were making a comeback from the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 positions.

From the No. 1 position, Yigin lost her first set 6-3, but tied the second set 3-3 against Raquel Amaro, who recently won GSC Player of the Year, when the match concluded. Recuenco was winning the third set when the match ended from the No. 2 position 0-6, 6-4, 4-2.

Silwanowicz's match went unfinished from the No. 5 position as she was winning 7-6, 5-2 when the Argos secured the victory.

"We are looking forward to our match tomorrow with Auburn Montgomery again. It should be a super tough match, we lost to them in the regular season in a very close match and we're looking to turn that one around tomorrow," commented Racine.

The Argonauts will play the Warhawks on Friday at the Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. The first serve will be at 2:30 PM.
