MONTGOMERY, Ala.- In a toughest match so far in the Gulf South Conference tournament for the No. 1 seeded West Florida Men's Tennis Team, the Argonauts found a way to win against the No. 3 seeded West Alabama 4-2 on Friday morning to advance to the GSC Tournament Championship. This is the 22
nd time the Argos have made it to the GSC finals and 11
th consecutive appearance.
West Florida will face the No. 2 seeded Valdosta State in the GSC Tournament Championship. This will mark the 22
nd time these two teams have met in the men's final.
From today's match, doubles proved to be the deciding factor as the Argonauts dropped their matches from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to give the Tigers the lone point.
Salvador Bandeira and
Lluis Miralles Miro were the first to drop their match, falling 6-2 from the No. 2 position giving the Tigers the first point.
Pedro Cordeiro and
Bernardo Costa were unable to capture the next point as they dropped their match 6-3 as the No. 3 pair.
Facundo Bermejo and
Tomas Descarrega were unable to finish their match from the No. 1 position due to the Tigers securing the doubles point.
In singles, the Argonauts had to fight back to win the match as they were victorious from four of the six singles positions.
The first win would come from the Tiger's Loic Danze as he defeated Bandeira 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 5 position.
Cordeiro sealed the first victory for the Argos 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 6 position. Costa won in an intense match being determined by a tiebreaker from the No. 4 position 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Descarrega dominated his match in two sets from the No. 3 position 6-4, 6-4 against Illia Dehodiuk. The next point from the top of the lineup would come Bermejo, who won in the third set 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 from the No. 2 position.
Juan Cabrera's match would go unfinished due to the Argos claiming the singles points, he lost the first set 4-6, then won the second 6-2, and was tied in the tiebreaker 5-5 before the match concluded.
Tomorrow's match will also see the Blazers try to extend their championship lead of the Argonauts as they currently have won 14 championships to West Florida's 12.
The Argos defeated the Blazers 4-3 earlier in the season and look to claim the conference title on Saturday morning.
UWF will take on the Blazers at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. The first serve is set for 10 AM (CT).
