MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- It was a tough day for the No. 11 West Florida Men's Tennis Team as their season ended against No. 2 Barry. The Argonauts fell 4-0 against the No. 1 seeded Buccaneers.
From the start, the Argonauts put up a strong fight, but it was not enough to take down the Buccaneers.
In doubles,
Pedro Cordeiro and
Bernardo Costa got the first doubles point as they won their match 6-2 as the No. 3 pair.
Salvador Bandeira and
Lluis Miralles Miro were unable to get the next point as the pair fell in their match 6-3 against the No. 21 ranked duo in the nation Arnau Rodriguez and Alejandro Gallego from the No. 2 position.
It came down to
Facundo Bermejo and
Tomas Descarrega to claim the final doubles point to get the lone point. Bermejo and Descarrega could not muster up enough to take down Ignasi Forcano and Martin Gutierrez as they dropped their match 7-5 from the No. 1 position.
Heading into singles, the Argonauts could not get the momentum going as they dropped three matches with three going unfinished due to the Buccaneers winning the match.
From the top of the lineup,
Juan Cabrera battled against the No. 17 player in the nation Alejandro Palacios, but ended up falling 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 1 position. Bermejo dropped his match 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 2 position.
Descarrega won the first set 7-5, but was losing 4-1 from the No. 3 position when the match concluded.
Bandeira fell just short in his match 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 4 position against the No. 23 player in the nation Alessandro Giuliato.
Cordeiro and
Sebastian Sotelo's matches went unfinished due to the Buccaneers winning the match. Sotelo was tied 3-3 in the second set when the match ended from the No. 5 position. Cordeiro won the first set 6-3, but was down 5-4 in the second set from the No. 6 position when the match concluded.
This is the third straight season that Barry has knocked the Argos out of the NCAA Tournament as they will now advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals which will be held in Altamonte Springs, Fla. from May 17-21.
The Argonauts had a great season going 21-7 on the season and winning the Gulf South Conference Championship for the first time since 2017. This NCAA Tournament appearance makes it the 25
th consecutive appearance for the Argonauts.
