West Florida Gets Strong Pitching, Clutch Hitting on Saturday

UWF improved to 4-4 on the year with a sweep over Rollins and Embry-Riddle

LONGWOOD, Fla. – It was a complete day for the University of West Florida softball team on Saturday, as the Argonauts got two great outings in the circle and some timely hitting in a sweep over Rollins and Embry-Riddle.

The sweep pushed UWF to 4-4 on the season, ahead of next Saturday's home-opener with Flagler.

Erin Moon and Madelyn Vasquez each had multiple hits in both games on Saturday. Those were Moon's first two multi-hit games of the year, and Vasquez leads the team with four multi-hit contests.

Vasquez extended her hitting streak to five games and led the team in batting (.643), runs (5), hits (9), doubles (2), RBIs (4), and slugging (.929) over the weekend. Moon, Ford, and Madilynne Webb each hit over .400 on the weekend.

Jeya Prasad and Montana Young were both outstanding on Saturday, allowing one run apiece over 14 innings of work.

UWF has its home-opener on Saturday, February 18, against Flagler. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4 pm start at the UWF Softball Complex.

GAME 1: UWF 4, Rollins 1
West Florida took no time getting the action started on Saturday morning. Erin Moon doubled after Kayla Mayo was hit by a pitch in the first inning, and Madelyn Vasquez followed that up with a two-run single to jump ahead 2-0.

Rollins starting pitcher Ashley Worrell homered to start the second and cut into the UWF lead, but the Argonauts got three singles to start the third and stretch the lead to 4-1.

It would be Moon and Vasquez to start the inning with hits, before freshman Hannah Harper drove in both runners with a single to left field. Those were the first RBIs of Harper's career.

Jeya Prasad had no trouble with the Tars lineup on Saturday. The sophomore struck out six batters and allowed just two hits in the contest, improving to 2-2 on the year.

GAME 2: UWF 7, Embry-Riddle 1
Moon and Vasquez picked up right where they left off in Game 2, each adding an RBI in the first inning. Jessica Ford led off the game with a single and scored on Moon's single to center field, after Kayla Mayo moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Vasquez followed with an RBI double to center, scoring Moon and stretching the UWF lead to 2-0 early.

That was all the help Montana Young needed on Saturday. The junior from Slidell, Louisiana, allowed just one run and four hits over her seven innings of work. She struck out one and did not issue a walk, while picking up her first win of the young season.

West Florida ended up hitting .429 (12-28) in the game, including a blistering .583 (7-for-12) with runners in scoring position.

Moon added another RBI single to center in the third inning, scoring Ford after another leadoff single and Mayo's second sacrifice bunt of the game.

Vasquez singled and stole second before Hannah Harper reached on a fielder's choice and brought in Moon, marking the freshman's first career RBI. Emma Brice also picked up her first career RBI in the inning, lifting a sacrifice fly to score Vasquez.

UWF led 5-0 after three innings.

Moon and Vasquez added another pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, with each of them picking up an RBI single.

Vasquez ended the day going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a stolen base. Moon went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and both Ford and Ayana Powell went 2-for-3.
