PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Montana Young was in complete control for the majority of West Florida's 6-2 win over Montevallo on Friday evening, as the Argonauts improved to 14-13 on the year. The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 pm.
After a single and a walk to lead off the game, Young retired 15 batters in a row and improved to 8-4 on the year with a complete game victory. She struck out nine batters, just one off tying her career high.
She only ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh innings, when Montevallo scored a pair of runs. With her seven innings of work on Friday, Young has now thrown to a 1.29 ERA over her last five appearances, with 23 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.
Madelyn Vasquez picked up UWF's first hit of the game, with a hustle double into centerfield.
Erin Moon followed with a line drive double of her own into left-center that scored Vasquez and gave UWF an early 1-0 lead.
Kelsey Hodges extended UWF's lead in the third with a two-run double to left-center, scoring Vasquez and
Hannah Harper.
Hodges was back at it again in the fifth with her third hit of the day – an RBI single that scored Vasquez.
Jessica Ford followed with a single up the middle to bring in Hodges, putting UWF ahead 5-0.
Montevallo picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but
Erin Moon got the run right back when she laced a double to right field and scored
Kayla Mayo in the bottom of the inning.
The Falcons scored one more run in the seventh before Young struck out Alisha Lanyon to end the game.
Hodges picked up three hits in the game, marking her second three-hit contest of the season. Moon and Mayo each had two hits.
