VALDOSTA, Ga.- It was a tough day for the No. 4 West Florida men's tennis team as they fell to No. 2 Valdosta State 6-1 on Monday afternoon.
The Blazers remain undefeated with a 14-0, 9-0 GSC record. The Argos fall to 14-3, 7-2 GSC as they conclude the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Valdosta State took control in doubles from all three positions.
Tomas Descarrega and
Facundo Bermejo dropped their match 6-3 to No. 19 Luca Mack and Rodrigo Carvalho as No. 1. The pair falls to 13-2 on the season.
Bernardo Costa and
Sebastian Rondon fell in their match from the No. 2 position 6-2.
Adam Svensson and
Albin Ekenros could not come up with the win from the No. 3 position as they fell 6-4.
"The guys came up short but competed well today. We came out a little flat in doubles and a little too defensive and that was the difference there," said head coach
Derrick Racine.Â
Heading into singles, the Blazers continued their momentum, but not without the Argos putting up a fight. Four of the six singles matches went into three sets.
From the bottom half of the lineup, Rondon fought hard but ultimately fell to Christian Felline 6-2, 6-0 as No. 5.
Mateo Martinez dropped his match in a close three match as he fell in the first set 2-6, won the second 6-2, but dropped in the third 2-6 from No. 6 singles.
Santiago Kearney battled from the No. 4 position in three sets as he lost the first 1-6, swept the second 6-0, and fell in the third 4-6.
From the top of the lineup, Bermejo was the only Argo to win in singles. The senior won in two tiebreaking sets 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) from the No. 2 position. He is 12-3 in singles on the season.
"In singles, the guys started slow but worked back into the matches winning the second sets in three of the matches.
Facundo Bermejo played very solid and come through with a great win for the Argos at No. 2. Both teams played a great regular season and are looking strong as we head into postseason play."
Costa and Descarrega fell in their matches from the No. 3 and No. 1 position. Costa fell in three sets to Lamar Bartley 5-7, 7-5, 1-6 while Descarrega fell to No. 2 singles player in the nation Luca Mack 6-4, 6-4.
