Mayo's Walkoff Single Gives Argos Win Over AUM

West Florida’s final home series will be next weekend against West Alabama

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Senior Kayla Mayo delivered the walkoff single to cap off West Florida's series with Auburn Montgomery on Saturday afternoon. UWF improved to 18-17 overall and 10-13 in the Gulf South Conference with the win.

Mayo led UWF with three hits on the day, and Hannah Harper, Madelyn Vasquez, and Kelsey Hodges each had two hits.

West Florida jumped ahead early, after Hannah Harper hit a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

AUM responded with a run in the second, before Jessica Ford drove an inside-the-park home run down the right field line, bringing in herself and Kelsey Hodges to give UWF a 3-1 lead. That was Ford's third home run of the season.

The Warhawks struck again in the top of the third with another pair of runs to even the score, but West Florida got those runs right back and more. Kayla Mayo drove a two-run double down the left field line with the bases loaded, Bella Holliday added a two-run single, and Erin Moon picked up an RBI single.

In all, West Florida tallied five runs on four hits in the inning to take an 8-3 lead.

A two-run double from AUM's Kat Fallen cut into the lead in the fourth, and AUM added three more runs in the sixth to even the score.

Tied at 8-8 in the seventh, AUM was threatening with two runners on and just one out. The Warhawks attempted to steal third with Allie Miller, but a strong throw from Erin Moon and the tag from Emma Brice covering third got the critical second out.

Montana Young struck out Fallen to end the inning immediately after.

Young got the start and threw four innings – she was charged with five runs and struck out three in her outing. Alayna Lowery entered the game in the top of the fifth and threw two innings. Lowery was charged with three runs, only one of which was earned.

Young re-entered in the top of the seventh and finished the game off, improving to 11-5 on the season.

West Florida will host West Alabama next Saturday and Sunday at the UWF Softball Complex for a three-game GSC series.
