PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team fell in Sunday's series finale with West Alabama at the UWF Softball Complex, 9-1. With the loss, UWF falls to 19-19 on the year and 11-15 in the Gulf South Conference.
Senior
Kayla Mayo hit a team-best .500 in the series with UWA, with four hits including a double.
Erin Moon and
Laurynn Boggs each hit .333 in the series, and Boggs and
Emma Brice led UWF with three RBIs.
West Alabama jumped ahead with a four-run first inning, but UWF chipped away quickly and got a sacrifice fly from
Emma Brice in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 4-1.
West Florida kept the momentum going in the top of the second, with an inning-ending double play.
Montana Young picked up her second strikeout of the afternoon and
Erin Moon made a perfect throw to
Kayla Mayo to catch GSC leading base-stealer Kelsie Gilliam to end the inning.
UWA added runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings to stretch the lead to 9-1.
Montana Young was charged with five runs over 2.1 innings in her starts, with a pair of strikeouts.
Alayna Lowery entered the game in the third inning, throwing 2.2 innings and being charged three runs.
Jeya Prasad wrapped up the game for UWF in the circle, throwing 1.0 inning with a pair of strikeouts and two runs allowed.
UWF will host Spring Hill in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 2 pm.
