No. 6 West Florida Sweeps Tars 4-0 in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Bermejo clinches the final point

VALDOSTA, Ga.- It was a picture perfect day for the No. 6 West Florida men's tennis team as they swept No. 13 Rollins 4-0 on Friday morning in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Argos improve to 16-4 on the season and advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 1 seed and host Valdosta State on Saturday morning. Saturday's contest is slated for 9 a.m. (EST) at the VSU Tennis Courts.

This is the 20th straight year the Argos have advanced in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. West Florida is now 75-21 in tournament play, which is the second most in NCAA Division II Men's Tennis behind Barry.

"Tomorrow will be a big match between UWF and VSU. Both teams are very familiar with each other and it should be another epic battle. The Blazers have got the better of us so far this season but tomorrow is a new match and a new day. The guys are fired up and will be ready to leave it all on the court," said head coach Derrick Racine.

HOW IT HAPPENED

West Florida took control from the beginning of the match in doubles. Facundo Bermejo and Tomas Descarrega won 6-1 from the No. 1 doubles. Albin Ekenros and Adam Svennson cruised past Richard Stoirberer and Charlie Putrino in their match 6-1 as the No. 3 pair to clinch the lone doubles point. Bernardo Costa and Sebastian Rondon's match went unfinished due to the Argos securing the lone doubles point. The pair was up 3-2 before the match concluded.

"I was super proud of the boys today and the way they came out early in the match. Rollins has been a super tough team in doubles all year and we knew we had to jump on them quickly to get the momentum and that's exactly what the guys did. Once we secured the doubles point, the guys stayed focused and played some really good singles," stated Racine.

Heading into singles, UWF maintained their control with a 1-0 lead.

From the top of the lineup, the Argos extended their lead from the No. 1 position with Descarrega handling Efe Comu 6-1, 6-2.

Mateo Martinez secured the next point for the Argos with a 6-4, 6-1 win from the No. 5 position.

The match was clinched by Bermejo on court 2 when he came out on top in a close match over Luke Quaynor. The two setters went in favor of the Argos 6-4, 6-4 to win their 15th match of the year and face off against Gulf South Conference foe, Valdosta State.

Santiago Kearney, Rondon, and Joaquin Estevez's matches all went unfinished due to the Argos clinching the victory. All three players were up in the second set of their matches.

"We got a big win at No. 1 from Tomas Descarrega to put us up then Mateo Martinez came through with a straight set and victory at five. Facundo Bermejo who has been solid all year with a big win at number two to clinch the victory for the Argos."
