Argos defeat Newberry and Georgia Southwestern to Extend Win Streak

UWF goes undefeated on weekend, win two games in two cities Saturday

AMERICUS, Ga. – UWF Softball (9-4) completed its tour of Georgia with two more wins after defeating the Newberry Wolves 7-5 this morning in Columbus and then traveling to Americus, GA where they run ruled the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes 19-9.

UWF is now on a five-game win streak and has won eight of their last nine. They went 5-1 in the state of Georgia this week, splitting two at Valdosta State and sweeping all their games in the Cougar-Hurricane Classic.

Emma Brice had zero home runs before the Argos' left for their Georgia road trip Wednesday, but the sophomore is now in the top ten in all of DII softball with five home runs on the season. Brice added another in the win over GSWU, and now leads the Argos in runs (15). She is also second on the team in hits (15) and RBIs (12).

Madelyn Vasquez once again warrants a mention for extending her hit streak now to eight games as she had one against Newberry and three against GSWU. Her 16 RBIs leads the Gulf South Conference, and her 18 hits is second in the GSC.

UWF has exploded offensively in the last six games, specifically in extra-base hits. The Argos are leading the conference in doubles (25) and are second in home runs (19). Six Argos hit homers against GSWU, with Gianna Guerriero hitting her first of the season.

UWF 7, Newberry 5

The final score of the Argos' game against Newberry might mislead some as a back-and-forth battle. Instead, the Argos did all their damage in the first inning and managed to stave off Newberry for the next six innings.

UWF scored all seven of their runs in the first but went down in order every single inning after that. Multiple Argo batters advanced on back-to-back fielding errors by the Wolves in the first, which set up a Vasquez  RBI single, advancing Erin Moon and Bella Holliday while scoring Emma Brice.  Newberry could not seem to find an out as four different Argos earned RBI hits including Jessica Ford, who added a 2-RBI double.

UWF would not score a run the rest of the way, and had their bats fall silent as the Wolves slowly climbed back into the game. Newberry scored three runs in the third inning, triggering a pitching change for UWF. Hannah Harper got the start, but Montana Young earned the win as the senior came in and only allowed two more runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Newberry hit a home run off Young in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 7-5 but managed nothing against her in the seventh, sealing the win for UWF.

UWF 19, Georgia Southwestern 9

Much like UWF's game against Newberry, the Argos started off scorching at the plate. This time they wouldn't relent, putting up at least two runs in every one of the five innings against GSWU.

Vasquez again began the scoring, driving in Moon and Guerriero on a double. A 2-RBI single from Bella Holiday and Jessica Ford's third home run of the season brought it to 6-0 UWF.

The Hurricanes were active at the plate as well and hit four home runs off the Argos' pitching staff in the game. The first home run in the bottom of the first made it 6-2. UWF responded with two more home runs from Brice and Vasquez, to take a 10-2 lead.

A GSWU RBI single in the bottom of the second was followed by another RBI double from Brice, an RBI single from Vasquez, and a Hannah Harper 2-RBI single. GSWU kept swinging even when down 14-3, going long on a 2-RBI home run to bring it to 14-5.

Guerriero stepped up to the plate and hit her first home run of the season in the fourth, scoring two more runs for UWF at 16-6. Another GSWU homer and sac-fly RBI brought the lead back under double-digits.  Jessie Baughan hit the sixth and final home run of the game to score three more runs.

By the fifth, Hailee Bryan entered for Montana Young and closed out the final inning. The Hurricanes made one last strike with a center field home run, but the overpowering bats of UWF controlled the game for a 19-9 run rule.
