Argos Top Wayne State in Final Match in Indianapolis

UWF Earns Top 10 Win Heading into Conference Play

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The No. 5 Argos (1-2) finished the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship with a 4-3 win in the seventh-place matchup this morning against No. 8 Wayne State (Mich.) (3-4) at the UIndy Tennis Center.

The Warriors, who finished in last place in the tournament but have had all four losses come to top 10 teams in the same venue and who own wins over No. 15 Washburn and D1 Toledo, saw their top two doubles teams weather narrow contests to claim the early lead over UWF. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer, ranked No. 13 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings, took down the previously unbeaten duo of Diego Duran and Albin Ekenros 7-5. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey, No. 5 in doubles, were pushed to the brink by Sebastian Rondon and Sebastian Sotelo in the No. 1 contest before prevailing in the tiebreaker set 7-6 (7-2). The third match went unfinished as Joaquin Estevez and Mateo Martinez led 6-5 in the first set.

Grey, the No. 10 player in DII, topped No. 15 Bernardo Costa in two 6-1 sets to stake his team to a 2-0 advantage. From there, however, the Argos flipped the switch, determined not to have a repeat of the first two contests. Martinez defeated Joe Kelt 6-3, 6-2. Duran evened the score with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Denali Kitayama before Ekenros repeated Duran's feat over Benjamin Hill to flip the scales. Duran, a freshman El Salvador native, improved to 3-0 in singles on the young season.

Drenth put the Warriors right back in it with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Sotelo, assuring that this one would come down to the final contest. With a tied contest, the matchup between Spicer and Rondon lived up to the hype and went to three sets after Spicer won the first 6-3 and Rondon the second 6-2. With the match on the line, Rondon finished it off with another 6-2 final in the third frame.

UWF heads back to Pensacola with a much-needed win entering GSC play. The conference slate begins February 24 at 10 am against Lee at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex after the original season opener versus Shorter was postponed.
