PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a successful return to the friendly confines of the UWF Softball Complex for West Florida (11-7, 0-3) as the Argos swept their midweek doubleheader over the Spring Hill Badgers (1-10) by scores of 7-3 and a 10-2 run rule.
UWF got off to hot starts in both games, belting four home runs in the first two innings of game one, and relying on a 3-RBI homer from
Jessie Baughan to take the early lead in game two. The Argos had double digit hits in both games, seeing balanced production from their lineup from top to bottom once again.
Baughan continues to show why she was selected to the GSC newcomers watch list, as the sophomore belted two more home runs during the doubleheader to extend her home run streak to four games. Her eight total homers lead the team and is tied for second nationally in division II softball. Overall, the Alabama native had three hits with three runs, a double and five RBI in addition to the two home runs in the doubleheader.
Hannah Harper (4-3) and
Montana Young (7-3) once again shared the workload in the doubleheader, as Harper earned the win for game one and Young for game two. Harper pitched a full game in game one, allowing only one earned run and two walks in seven innings. Young tallied a season-high seven strikeouts against the Badgers in game two, also limiting the Badgers to two earned runs and a single walk.
Gianna Guerriero continues to be a dynamo at the lead off spot for UWF, with the junior now having the best batting average on the team (.429). She is now on a six game hit streak and has recorded nine runs, 12 hits, three doubles, two home runs and four RBI since her return from Injury.
Game 1: UWF 7, SHC 3
UWF forced Spring Hill to warm up the bullpen early as
Emma Brice's solo shot and
Hannah Harper's 2-RBI homer gave the Argos the lead in the first frame.
Jessie Baughan and
Jessica Ford extended the lead with solo home runs in the second.
The 5-0 lead carried to the fourth inning, when Spring Hill made things interesting with an Airyonna Weaver solo home run followed by a score on a UWF fielding error and a sacrifice fly out in the fifth. The score moved to 5-3 Argos entering the sixth.
UWF responded in the sixth and iced the Spring Hill comeback.
Chelsea Dumas recorded an RBI double, and she would eventually be driven in by a sacrifice bunt by
Erin Moon. The Argos fielders would close out the frame in the seventh and secure a 7-3 win.
Game 2: UWF 10, SHC 2 / 6 inn.
UWF started the scoring in game two with yet another home run from
Jessie Baughan, driving in three runners in the second inning.
Gianna Guerriero also managed to score
Jessica Ford on a sacrifice bunt to give UWF a 4-0 lead.
It was quite for a couple innings as both teams stranded runners on base. Spring Hill found success against an otherwise dominant
Montana Young in the fifth, hitting back-to-back solo home runs off the senior. This drew the score to 4-2.
From the bottom of the fifth on, the game was completely controlled by UWF due to small ball and Spring Hill errors. A wild pitch scored
Hannah Harper and an error scored
Brianna Jennings in the fifth. In the sixth, another sacrifice bunt by
Madelyn Vasquez scored
Emma Brice. Later in the inning, a groundout by Harper brought in Bella Holiday, and Baughan doubled to bring in Jennings again.
With the score 9-2,
Jessica Ford hit what seemed like a fly-out to left field, but it was dropped by Spring Hill resulting in an error that would cost them the game. Baughan came in on the unearned run, triggering the 10-2 run rule victory.
