LIVINGSTON, Ala. - No. 17 UWF women's tennis (6-3, 4-1 GSC) fell 6-1 to West Alabama (6-5, 3-0 GSC) on Sunday at Vaughan Tennis Complex in a match full of narrow sets that the No. 11 Tigers were able to get the upper hand in.
The Argos dropped two of three in doubles to see their day start on a low note that they were unable to recover from.
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Guadalupe Martinez took the third matchup 6-3 to post a 3-0 mark in doubles play over the weekend. Martinez also gave the team its lone point at No. 3 singles over Heden Ly 6-4, 6-3. She improved her record to 7-2 in both singles and doubles, winning her fourth consecutive match in doubles and sixth consecutive in singles.
Three Argos saw a singles set go to a tiebreaker, with
Carlota Verdu winning hers in the first set of the No. 1 matchup before falling 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 2-6 to the No. 13 singles player in the nation in Khim Iglupas. Midori Da Silva fought but couldn't pull off a set win, suffering a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) setback. At No. 6,
Jenna Svatos took a close opening set over Greta Zawels before losing in the super tiebreaker in the third set, taking a 7-5, 2-6, 0-1 (7-10) loss. After Martinez's win, the Argos' final two singles matchups ended in straight-set Tigers wins.
UWF wraps up its last stretch of true road games this season, with three matches apiece in upcoming weekends playing in Columbus and Valdosta, Ga. The team returns home for its next three matches, starting with a March 16 match against Xavier (La.).
