COLUMBUS, Ga. - No. 17 UWF men's tennis (10-4, 4-1 GSC) claimed a crucial Top 20 win against No. 19 North Georgia (9-3, 1-0 PBC) 5-2 at the Walden Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Sebastian Sotelo and
Tomas Leston defeated Christopher Cahour and Tyler Cunningham at No. 3 doubles 6-3. However, UNG came back and took doubles, as Giulio Sassi and Marcos Castellanos topped
Diego Duran and
Mateo Martinez 6-4 at No. 1 while Eliseo Alcalde Sangoy and Robin Eldin narrowly beat
Albin Ekenros and
Joaquin Estevez at No. 2 via tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2).Â
Â
From there, the Argos dug deep in singles to earn the win by a comfortable margin. At the No. 6 matchup, Leston easily topped Roko Misura in two 6-1 sets. Ekenros won 6-1, 6-3 over Cahour at No. 3 while
Denilso Martinez took down Alcalde Sangoy 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5. Sassi was responsible for the Nighthawks' last point of the day, with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 over
Sebastian Rondon. However, Duran got the point back with a comeback at No. 4 before pulling out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Castellanos. Sotelo finished off the win by earning a personal 2-0 finish, defeating Eldin at No. 2 via the super tiebreaker 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).Â
Â
With the win, UWF ups its winning streak to eight contests, coming back from a 2-4 record at the time of the last loss on March 1 at then-No. 12 UT Tyler. The Argos return home from the 2-0 weekend in Columbus to prepare to restart conference play in a huge way at home next week with a match between the top two teams in the conference standings. They take on bitter rival Valdosta State, currently sitting at No. 5 nationally while at one point occupying the No. 1 spot, on March 30. UWF will look to exact revenge for its last two meetings with the Blazers, last season in the NCAA South Regional Championship and last month in the ITA D2 National Men's Team Indoor Championship .Â
