Argos Take Both Games of Saturday Doubleheader Against Delta State

Young earns fourth shutout in four starts, UWF clinches series over Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Florida Softball (19-12, 8-6) never trailed in both games against Delta State (7-25, 3-11) claiming two convincing wins and clinching the series against the Statesmen.

UWF hit double digits in their scoring total for the eighth time this season after their 10-3 win in game two and shut out Delta State in their 6-0 game one victory. The pair of wins also marks the fourth and fifth straight wins for the Argos in Gulf South Conference play.

Montana Young pitched her fourth shutout in her last four starts in game one, throwing six strikeouts for the fourth time this season and helping UWF strand seven total runners on base. Hannah Harper also pitched a complete game and only allowed two earned runs in her win.

Harper also went 6 for 8 at the plate with two runs, a double, and an RBI in her combined stat line from the twin bill. Gianna Guerriero, Erin Moon and Madelyn Vasquez also had impressive outings at bat. Guerriero went 5 for 8 with three runs, a triple, and three RBI. Vasquez went a combined 3 for 7 with four runs, a double, a home run, and four RBI. Moon went 3-7 with two runs, a home run, and four RBI.

Game 1: UWF 6, DSU 0

Guerriero singled to center field to score Jessica Ford and put UWF up 1-0. In the second, Erin Moon hit team home run no. 54 and Ford knocked an RBI single to score Madelyn Vasquez.

The 3-0 Argos lead was expanded in the fourth with a Vasquez two-RBI double and a Hannah Harper RBI single. UWF pushed the game open to 6-0 and didn't look back.

In the bottom of the fourth, Delta State managed to load the bases off a couple walks and a single. Montana Young and the Argo's fielders held strong, with Young striking out two batters and the final Statesman batter flying out to left field to continue the shutout.

Both teams brought several runners on bases in the following innings, but the 6-0 score proved to be the final as Young shut down the Statesmen to secure the Argos' seventh conference win.

Game 2: UWF 10, DSU 3

Hannah Harper got the start on the mound in game two. An error at third base allowed Chelsea Dumas to score first for the Argos in the top of the third. Erin Moon's RBI single extended it to 2-0.

Delta State responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to bring ig within a run. Jessie Baughan took that run right off the board with a RBI double that scored Harper. In the fourth, Delta State managed to put another run back on with a pass ball that scored a runner after a triple. DSU placed multiple runners but Harper and company managed to strand the rest of them and limit the damage.

With the score now 3-2 Argos in the fifth, UWF took control and scored Guerriero on a fielder's choice and added another on a Vasquez solo home run.

In the top of the sixth, a bases-loaded walk on Guerriero scored Bella Holliday. Another error on DSU brought in Baughan unearned to make it 7-2. A fielder's choice brought in Dumas to push it to 8-2
The Statesmen hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

UWF wasn't done yet, putting up a score in their fifth straight inning by adding two more on a Dumas two-RBI single. The Statesmen went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Argos the 10-3 win and a series clinch.
