PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (22-12, 11-6) took both games against the Shorter Hawks (2-31, 1-19) on a picturesque day at the Fork Friday afternoon.
The Argos won the doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 10-0. It is the eighth straight win for UWF, both in conference and overall.
The Argos' game two run-rule win was driven by an eight-run third inning, following a similar trend of the explosive tendencies UWF has shown this season. Last weekend UWF managed 14 runs in the third inning in the final game against Delta State and a nine run sixth inning against Mississippi College at the beginning of the month.
Montana Young earned win 13 this season and threw a season-high eight strikeouts while doing so. Her first five strikeouts came in just the first three frames of the contest. Harper earned win nine and shut out the Hawks in the game two run rule win. The sophomore hurled four strikeouts of her own and only allowed a single walk in the game.
Madelyn Vasquez had another impressive showing against the Hawks, going a combined 3-6 (.500) with two runs, a home run and five RBI. This comes on the heels of her being named to the Tucci/NFCA Player & Pitcher of the Year Watchlist.
Jessie Baughan was also one single shy of hitting for the cycle in game one, as the sophomore went 3-3 with a double, triple, and home run in addition to two runs and an RBI. She is once again tied with
Emma Brice for the team lead with 12 home runs this season.
Game 1: UWF 9, Shorter 3
Gianna Guerriero continues to shine in the leadoff spot, scoring the first run of the game in the first inning by stealing third and then advancing to home on a throwing error. Through the first three frames,
Montana Young dominated on the mound, making short work of the Hawks' lineup.
Vasquez added to the lead in the third on an RBI single that scored
Erin Moon. With the lead 2-0 in the fourth, Baughan hit the first of multiple home runs for UWF on the day, driving a solo shot to left field to extend the lead to 3-0.
UWF split the game open in the fifth, beginning with a
Hannah Harper sacrifice fly out that allowed
Emma Brice to score.
Brianna Jennings hit her third home run of the year next, also scoring Vasquez. Finally, Ford hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Baughan and rounding at the fifth inning at 7-0 UWF.
The Argos were on the cusp of a run-rule but Shorter fought to continue play and managed to hit a 3-RBI home run off Young to bring it to 7-3 in the sixth. Harper singled to left field in the bottom of the inning which cleared Moon and
Cameron Wolfenden.
Shorter was down to its final three outs, but
Montana Young threw her eighth strikeout and the UWF infielders did the rest to take the 9-3 game one victory.
Game 2: UWF 10, Shorter 0 / 5 inn.
Guerriero once again opened the game up with a score off a throwing error in the first inning, shortly followed by a Vasquez RBI groundout to bring in
Emma Brice.
The 2-0 Argos lead remained until the third when the Argos blew open the game with an eight-run inning that allowed the Argos to work its way through the entire lineup. Vasquez homered to right center for a 3-RBI blast to push it to 5-0.
Another Shorter throwing error scored
Victoria Tunon and
Hannah Harper right after.
Chelsea Dumas scored Baughan and Ford on an RBI single to move up to 9-0, and Dumas was brought around to home with a Guerriero double to left field.
The 10-0 Argos lead ended up being the final, as neither team could add runs in the fourth and Harper assisted the UWF defense with securing the last three outs to get the run-rule win in five innings.
