Argos Drop Heartbreaker to Choctaws in Quarterfinals

UWF Left to Await Potential Regionals Berth

GSC Championship Central

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 22 and 4-seed UWF women's tennis (12-11, 7-3 GSC) suffered a tough ending to their time in the GSC Championship with a down-to-the-wire 4-3 upset loss to No. 28 and 5-seed Mississippi College (14-8, 7-3 GSC) in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Lagoon Park.

It appeared that the Argos were getting ready to advance to the semifinals when they took the doubles point and No. 1 singles. Aline Midori Da Silva and Carlota Verdu took down the No. 16-ranked doubles team in the country in Elyangelica Alas and Fernanda Cota 6-3 to start things off on court one. Guadalupe Martinez and Giuliana Sacco then pulled out a win at No. 3 over Emma Roberts and Maria Rodriguez. The No. 2 matchup was called off with the point clinched. At the top of the singles lineup, Verdu finished off a 2-0 day with another win over Alas 6-0, 6-3.

At this point, the Choctaws tied things up as Roberts won 6-2, 6-2 over Da Silva on court two and Ana Julissa De Mata Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1. Nathalia Mossambani then put the Argos back in the lead with a pair of 6-4 set wins over Gabrielle Geolier at No. 4, but Cota got the point back for Mississippi College when she beat Martinez 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

It all came down to the matchup on court six between Luiza Daud and Anna Hudson. Daud ran away with the opening set 6-1 before the second set went to the tiebreaker and Hudson came out on top 7-6 (7-4). Down to the deciding set, Daud surrendered the first two points before coming back to tie it up at 2-2 and 3-3. However, Hudson stole back the momentum and the match with the final three games.

With the win, the Choctaws avenge their home loss to UWF two months ago by the same score, the only result keeping the latter ahead of them in the conference standings. The win is also their first ever over the Argos in 14 tries since Mississippi College moved up to Division II in 2014-15.

With its time in the GSC Championship finished and already on the outside looking in for a berth in the NCAA DII South Regional with its No. 10 ranking in the latest South Regional Rankings, UWF is left needing some help to go further in the postseason. If the Argos make the field, they will find out their destination in the NCAA DII Women's Tennis Selection Show on May 6 at 8:30 pm ET/7:30 pm CT.
