PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was all smiles on Senior Day at the UWF Softball Complex as the West Florida Argonauts (35-14, 22-8) run-ruled the Lee Flames (20-25, 14-16) by a score of 11-0 in five innings.
It is the seventh-straight GSC series win for the Argos as they continue their winning streak in conference series over the Flames. Since their last GSC series loss to Mississippi College on March 10, the Argos are 21-2 in conference play and vaulted themselves into the top three teams in the standings.
Jessie Baughan's bases-loaded RBI walk in the bottom of the first inning put the Argos over the threshold of a new single-season runs record. The original program record of 375 runs in a season was set by the 2005 UWF team. After today's 11-0 run rule win, the Argos are at 385 with at least two more guaranteed games to go in the GSC tournament.
The 2024 UWF softball team already broke the single season home runs and single season RBI record this year and are seven doubles away from breaking the single-season doubles record.
Chelsea Dumas,
Jessica Ford,
Madelyn Vasquez,
Madilynne Webb, and
Montana Young made up the class of graduating seniors recognized on the field prior to the game. Each one had their own contributions to the win in a different way. Vasquez scored three runs and added two hits including a double. Ford hit an RBI single in the second to extend a sizeable UWF lead. Dumas added a hit and a fielding assist, and Webb scored a run and got on base by walks twice.
Young (19-4) pitched her fifth shutout of the year on her senior day and threw eight strikeouts to tie her second highest total of the season. Her season ERA improves to 3.57 and continues to lead the team.
Sophomore
Hannah Harper also had a great showing at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs, a double, a home run, and five RBI.
UWF 11, LEE 0, / 5 inn.
Gianna Guerriero's consistent production from the leadoff spot continued in the Argos' final game of the regular season. The junior got on base after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and once again scored the game's first run for the Argos on an
Erin Moon RBI single up the middle.
Lee got into a jam with the bases loaded and walked two more Argo batters to give UWF two free runs. UWF headed into the second up 3-0 and
Montana Young owned the top of the second, striking out all three batters after giving up a single to close the half inning.
In the bottom of the second, Vasquez and Harper hit two straight RBI doubles. Moon,
Emma Brice, and Vasquez scored off of them, pushing the lead to 6-0. Harper worked her way to third where she was able to score on a Lee wild pitch. Finally, Ford hit her RBI single to score Webb and activate the run-rule up 8-0.
In the third, Lee was again stifled and moved to the bottom of the inning. Harper took any push for a comeback away from the Flames with a blast to right center for a three-RBI home run. In the final two Frames, Young and the Argos stranded multiple runners and sealed an 11-0 run-rule to take the series.
