PENSACOLA, Fla. - No. 18 UWF women's tennis (7-4, 3-1 GSC) fell 4-3 in a top-20 matchup against No. 19 West Alabama (5-3, 2-0 GSC) on Tuesday afternoon at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The matchup also featured the Nos. 3 and 2 teams in the conference standings, respectively.
The Argos landed the first punch on the scorecard at doubles after dropping the first matchup as
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani fell 6-2 to Alexa Milliam and Emiri Takanishi. It was then that
Carlota Verdu and
Sandra Recuenco, the No. 9-ranked doubles team in the nation, earned their most significant result of the season with a 6-4 win over the top-ranked pairing in Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba. Coming down to the No. 3 matchup,
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Guadalupe Martinez pulled out a neck-and-neck duel with Greta Zawels and Lolita Hukasian 7-6 (8-6).
However, the depth of the Tigers was too much to overcome in singles play. Martinez put her team up 2-0 on court four with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Takanishi. The Tigers scored their first point at the bottom of the lineup as Zawels won 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over
Alberte Joergensen and Rivera tied the match at the top with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Verdu. Hukasian gave her team the lead for good on court four with a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own over Mossambani. Milliam clinched the result on court two with her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Recuenco before Midori Da Silva pulled within one in the lone three-frame contest with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Mutilba.
The Argos don't have much time to move on from the tough loss, as they travel to Cleveland, Tenn., for a GSC match at Lee on Friday, the 15th, before heading to Dahlonega, Ga., for a huge contest the next day at No. 2 North Georgia.
