Women’s Tennis Takes Three of Four in Week 5

Argos Win Third GSC Match and Second Ranked Matchup of the Season

TYLER, Texas - No. 25 West Florida women's tennis (6-2, 3-0 GSC) head back to Florida after another successful weekend on the road, winning its third conference match of the season and taking two of three in the second annual GSC-Lonestar Crossover Tournament, including a second ranked win of the season, while pushing the fourth-ranked team in the nation to the edge in the lone setback of the week.

No. 25 UWF 5, Delta State 2
The Argos opened their week in Cleveland, Miss., taking on GSC foe Delta State (0-4). Sandra Recuenco and Carlota Verdu gathered a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Alberte Joergensen and Giuliana Sacco scored the point for UWF at No. 3 with a 6-2 win. At the top of the singles lineup, Elena Palioura tied the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Verdu. Aline Midori Da Silva got the point back one court down with a 6-2, 6-1 win before Guadalupe Martinez followed suit on the next court after that 6-1, 6-2. Nathalia Mossambani got the team one step closer to the win on court four 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to negate a No. 5 DSU win, and Luiza Daud sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the last matchup to send the Argos to the Lone Star State with their third GSC win.

No. 25 UWF 6, UT Tyler 1
UWF opened the GSC-Lonestar Tournament with a Friday match against the host Patriots (3-1), and did so in emphatic fashion. The Argos swept doubles, with a 6-1 win at No. 2 by Martinez and Midori Da Silva and 6-3 wins by Recuenco and Verdu at the top and Joergensen and Sacco at the bottom. Midori Da Silva got a second win right off the bat at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Verdu and Recuenco clinched the Argo victory with wins of 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 and 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Martinez scored the fifth UWF point on court four with a 6-3, 7-5 win. Though Paula Castellanos scratched back a point on court five over Joergensen, Daud responded in kind in the final matchup by pulling out a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) result.

No. 4 Midwestern State 4, No. 25 UWF 3
The Saturday match presented a much greater challenge in the form of the No. 4 Mustangs (8-1). Despite a huge 7-6 (7-3) win at the top of the doubles lineup by Recuenco and Verdu over the No. 13 duo in DII in Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga, the other two matchups resulted in 6-4 and 7-6 (7-3) wins for the Mustangs and the 1-0 lead. At the No. 3 singles matchup, Midori Da Silva tied the match with a huge 6-3, 7-5 victory over Sofia Giraldo, the No. 8 singles player in the nation. One court up, Hannah Yip got the point back with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Recuenco. Then, on the court up from there, Midwestern State went up 3-1 in a battle of ranked singles players, as No. 6 Binzari took down No. 38 Verdu 7-5, 6-4. Martinez and Joergensen would earn wins on courts four and five, respectively, but it wasn't enough as Sydney Williams provided the clincher with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daud.

No. 25 UWF 6, No. 18 Cameron 1
On Sunday morning, the Argos faced a team ranked No. 18 in the nation for the second time in as many weekends. They passed the first test in Memphis against Southern Arkansas, and they would fare even better against Cameron (0-3). For the second time in three matches on the weekend, UWF came up with a clean sweep in doubles to set itself up for a 6-1 win. Martinez and Midori Da Silva won 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup, Daud and Mossambani won 6-3 one court up and Verdu and Recuenco improved to 4-0 this week and 6-2 overall together with a 7-5 win at the top matchup.

At No. 6 singles, Sacco scored the second Argo point with a relatively easy 6-1, 6-1 win, taking 12 of the last 13 games out of just 14 altogether. Martinez followed suit at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-3 win, and Joergensen sealed the match outright with a 6-1, 6-3 result on court five. Recuenco pulled a win out of the fire at No. 2 following a 1-6 first set to narrowly take set two 6-4 and run away with the third frame 6-0. The Aggies' lone win at the top of the lineup was for naught as the last singles contest to conclude, as Midori Da Silva came out on top 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 on court three.

The Argos return home for their next matchup as they reenter South Region play on Tuesday, March 5 at 1 pm against Nova Southeastern.
