VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 10 UWF women's tennis (13-7, 5-3 GSC) wrapped up an undefeated weekend against the Sunshine State Conference in the Peach State by outlasting No. 34 Florida Southern (14-5, 4-4 SSC) 4-3. The Argos are 3-0 on the campus of Valdosta State this season, avenging last season's losses to Tampa and FSC here as well as a home loss to the Blazers.
Â
The Mocs bit and drew first blood with a huge upset on court one of doubles, as Kennedi Brown and Kelly Klaren knocked off the sixth-ranked doubles pairing in DII in
Carlota Verdu and
Sandra Recuenco 6-2. Emily Jennewein and Ronja Scheuermann clinched the point for the SSC side with a 6-1 final over
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani before
Guadalupe Martinez and
Aline Midori Da Silva scratched back a result 6-2 on court three.
Â
The Argos were rejuvenated in singles, as Midori Da Silva drew her team even with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court three over Scheuermann. Martinez took just one game longer to give her team the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 final, giving her a 2-0 day against Annika Berrendorf. Recuenco followed on court two by the same scores over Beatriz Costa. The Mocs weren't done, as they drew within one at the leadoff spot as No. 11 Olivia Bryant defeated No. 23 Verdu 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and at the bottom court, Klaren tied the match with her 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Daud. It all came down to court five between Mossambani and Jennewein. The senior from Maringa, Brazil, dropped the opening set 3-6 before pulling the second out of the fire in the tiebreaker round 7-6 (8-6) and getting her revenge with a 6-3 match-clinching win in the third set to send UWF home with two more regional wins on the courts of its conference rival.Â
Â
The Argos step outside of South Region and DII play as they travel to take on New Orleans of the DI Southland Conference on Friday, April 18 at 10 am, a return trip after their home match versus the Privateers last season was rained out. Â
