GSC CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
Â
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 5 seed West Florida women's tennis (16-7, 5-3 GSC) faced off with No. 4 seed Auburn Montgomery (11-7, 5-3 GSC) in the quarterfinals of the GSC Championship on Thursday at O'Connor Tennis Center. A loss across town at AUM earlier this month in the final regular-season GSC contest for the Argos, ranked No. 6 in the South Region, gave the Warhawks, sitting at No. 8, the tiebreaker in the standings. With that loss and last season's quarterfinals exit against Mississippi College fresh on their minds, the Argos quickly clinched the result in both doubles and singles and eliminated AUM 4-2 to advance to the GSC Semifinals tomorrow. The win is the first for UWF over AUM since the 2023 semis; the latter has taken the last four regular season meetings and narrowly leads the all-time series 11-10.Â
Â
The four All-GSC honorees for the Argos all played a role in avenging the April 2 loss.
Sandra Recuenco and
Carlota Verdu, ranked No. 6 in DII in doubles, started their postseason with an emphatic 6-0 sweep of the No. 44 pairing of Estefania Garcia and Ane Ibarra at the top of the lineup.
Guadalupe Martinez and
Aline Midori Da Silva followed on court three with their 6-2 win over Ksenija Vujacic and Allison Blanco to clinch the 1-0 lead.
Â
Verdu, also ranked No. 22 in singles, was involved in the only two ranked matchups of the contest and came out on top in both with her 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 44 Garcia to give her team a 2-0 lead. On the other end of the lineup,
Luiza Daud got her team within one point of clinching with her 6-0, 6-3 win against Sofia Neri. Then, on court four, No. 50 Martinez defeated Vujacic 6-4, 6-2 to finish things off, ensuring that Melissa Yakup Pour's win over Recuenco and Ibarra's over
Nathalia Mossambani were too little, too late.Â
Â
The Argos, ranked No. 9 in DII, advance to take on No. 1 seed West Alabama, sitting at No. 4 in the South Region and No. 8 in the nation, in the semifinals tomorrow at 10 am at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. The Tigers easily swept 8-seed Delta State today and are undefeated in GSC play. UWA narrowly edged out UWF in Pensacola 4-3 this season. With a win tomorrow, the Argos can get vengeance on another opponent and advance to the title match on Saturday.
