Argos Trade Run Rules with Georgia College in Milledgeville

UWF wins first contest 12-3 in five innings, drops second 3-11 in six

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – No. 13 UWF Softball (11-2) experienced both ends of run rule games against the Georgia College and State University Bobcats (2-6) in a doubleheader in Milledgeville Friday afternoon.

The Argos exploded for eight runs in the first inning of game one to push it into run-rule territory immediately, and never looked back. The reverse happened in game two, as Georgia College bats came alive, and a season-high in errors allowed the bobcats to claim a commanding lead.

UWF leaves Georgia 2-1 on the weekend, and now prepares for GSC play beginning with Christian Brothers at home.

Individual Highlights:

Freshman Miranda Harmon led the team with a .714 batting average on the day, going 5-7 with three runs and an RBI. She also stole two bases in the effort.

Hannah Harper batted .571 in two starts, going 4-7 with two runs and a double. She led all Argos with six RBI on the day, including four in game one.

Emma Brice hit two more doubles and went 3-7 at the plate to improve her .463 batting average, which is second on the team.

Kyndal Cornelius accounted for two runs in each game, compiling a team-high four total on the day.

UWF 12, GSW 3 / in 5 innings

Haley Guffey (7-0) got the start in the circle and claimed the win after the Argos went up big in the first three innings.

Harmon singled and stole second, with Harper scoring her on an RBI single. Brice doubled to score Mergen and Harper. Baughan reached and was scored along with Brice by Kyndal Cornelius on a single to left field. Fountain singled to bring in Cornelius, and Harper came back around in the order to bring Harmon in for her second time in the inning along with Bella Holliday. In all, the Argos knocked six hits for eight runs with an error and left two on base.

Up 8-0 and already in run rule territory, GCSU managed to score one on an RBI single to left field to push it back to a seven-run Argo lead. Both teams were held scoreless in the third, but UWF continued to lay it on with a Harper RBI single and a Mergen 2-RBI home run to score Harper.

GCSU hit a 2-RBI triple in in the bottom of the third bringing it back to an eight run Argo lead, 11-3. One more GCSU error gave the Argos the final run of the game in the fourth, allowing Cornelius to score. Mergen closed out the final two innings in the circle for the Argos and helped clinched the 12-3 run rule win for UWF with two scoreless innings.

UWF 3, GSW 11 / in six innings

Game two was almost a mirror opposite, as the Hurricanes jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning gaining the four runs on three hits and an error. Both teams went down quickly in the second, and UWF responded in the third by capitalizing on an error and scoring Cornelius.

The three-run deficit was short lived as the Bobcats scored three runners on a problematic inning for UWF Fielders where three errors were committed. UWF left one on in the fourth, and the Bobcats scored again in the bottom of the inning with four more hits leading to two runs, both scored on an RBI single with two outs.

UWF was on the brink of being run ruled in the fifth down 9-1 but pushed the game another inning by getting two hits and a walk. A fielder's choice led to an error and allowed Alex Whitfield and Cornelius to score.

In the fifth inning, a fifth UWF error led to a Bobcat runner getting aboard, and the runner advanced on a wild pitch and steal. She scored on an RBI groundout. Entering the sixth down 10-3, UWF only earned one hit and left that runner on. GCSU hit a solo home run on the first batter of the bottom of the sixth to get the walk off run-rule, 11-3.
