Softball Splits Doubleheader on the Road at Delta State

Argos take game one 7-4, drop game two 1-3.

CLEVELAND, Miss. — No. 7 West Florida (15-3, 4-1) split a doubleheader against Delta State University (4-12, 2-3) on Friday at University Field, securing a 7-4 victory in the first game before falling 3-1 in the second.

The Argos controlled most of game one and capitalized off sacrifice hits and multiple DSU fielding errors but were stifled at the plate in game two. The loss was their lowest run total of the season and tied for their lowest hit total (4, vs CBU).

UWF was riding an eight-game win streak in the series history with the Lady Statesmen before the loss in game two. The Argos have not lost a series to DSU since April of 2014 and will defend that streak tomorrow in game three with the weekend series tied.

Individual Highlights:

Haley Guffey earned her 10th win of the season in game one, allowing three earned runs in seven innings pitched in the victory. Her performance included inducing 8 flyouts and 9 groundouts, achieving a WHIP of 1.14. She also added 4 K's in the effort.

Freshman Meg Fountain batted .333 in the two games, scoring two runs and a hitting a double. She also added a steal on the base paths. Jessie Baughan went 2 for 5 (.400) with two RBI and a double in the effort today. Miranda Harmon also added two more runs from the leadoff spot and continues to lead the Argos in runs (21) as a freshman.

**Game 1: #7 UWF 7, DSU 4:**
West Florida capitalized on the Lady Statesmen's six errors, scoring three runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. The Argonauts took an early lead in the first inning when Miranda Harmon reached first on an error and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Emma Brice. Harmon scored on a fielder's choice by Hannah Harper, and Jessie Baughan drove in another unearned run on a fielder's choice, putting West Florida up 2-0.

In the third inning, Harper scored on a single by Baughan, extending the lead to 3-1. The fourth inning saw West Florida capitalize on errors by Delta State, with Kyndal Cornelius reaching on an error and scoring on a combination of a groundout and a throwing error. Harmon followed with a single and scored on a single by Brice, who later scored on a passed ball. The Argonauts led 6-2 at the end of the inning.

West Florida added another run in the fifth inning after Meg Fountain singled and scored on an error, bringing the score to 7-4. In the final two innings, the Argonauts maintained their lead as the Lady Statesmen failed to score. Guffey and UWF held off DSU as the game concluded with a final score of West Florida 7, Delta State 4.

**Game 2: #7 UWF 1, DSU 3**
In the second game of the doubleheader, West Florida fell to Delta State with a final score of 3-1. The Argonauts managed four hits, including two doubles, but were unable to overcome Delta State's sixth-inning surge. Delta State took an early lead in the third inning when M. Teague scored on a double by J. McKnight. By the end of the third inning, the Statesmen led 1-0.

West Florida responded in the fifth inning when Abigail Pippen singled, and after pinch runner Bella Holliday advanced on a double by Meg Fountain, Fountain eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyndal Cornelius. The score was tied 1-1 after the fifth inning. However, Delta State regained the lead in the sixth inning as M.
