TYLER, Texas — West Florida closed out the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament with a pair of dominant performances, defeating Cameron 7-0 on Saturday before earning a 6-1 victory over Midwestern State on Sunday. The Argonauts finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record in crossover play.
Saturday: West Florida 7, Cameron 0
West Florida opened the weekend with a commanding sweep of Cameron, securing the doubles point and winning all six singles matches.
The Argonauts set the tone early by sweeping doubles.
Guadalupe Martinez and Ali Midori Da Silva rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 2, while
Kylie Kochis and
Sophie Smith followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Sandra Recuenco and
Carlota Verdu capped the doubles sweep with a tight 7-6 win at No. 1.
In singles, West Florida continued to control the match. Martinez earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4, and Verdu followed with a straight-set victory at No. 1. Da Silva added another point at No. 3 before Recuenco clinched the match with a dramatic 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 comeback at No. 2.
Sophie Smith and
Alberte Joergensen completed the sweep with wins at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively.
Sunday: West Florida 6, Midwestern State 1
West Florida carried that momentum into Sunday's finale against Midwestern State. After dropping the doubles point, the Argonauts responded with a dominant singles performance, sweeping all six courts to secure the 6-1 victory.
Midwestern State claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the early lead, but West Florida quickly flipped the match in singles.
Sandra Recuenco Tarin delivered one of the most impressive wins of the day, defeating No. 42-ranked Emilia Gyorgy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Guadalupe Martinez added a straight-set victory at No. 4, and Aline Midori battled to a three-set win at No. 3.
Sophie Smith clinched the overall match with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 6.
Kylie Kochis followed with a gritty three-set comeback at No. 5, and No. 11-ranked
Carlota Verdu capped the day with a ranked victory over No. 10 Selin Sepken, rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles.
