PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida (24-6, 11-4 GSC) secured a decisive 9-0 victory over Union University (11-17, 6-9 GSC) at UWF Softball Complex on Saturday, with the game ending in just five innings due to the run rule.
West Florida hit two home runs and accumulated six hits, while Union managed only three hits in the game. The Argos earned the 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs, their second GSC sweep of the year. The Argos outscored the Bulldogs 18-1 in the overall score of the series.
UWF Softball player Cloey Criggall was honored after her passing last November, with her family throwing the ceremonial first pitch.
Individual Highlights:
Haley Guffey delivered a strong performance on the mound for the Argonauts, pitching 3 innings without allowing a run and conceding just three hits. She struck out one batter and maintained a WHIP of 1.00, controlling the game effectively with 23 strikes out of 33 pitches.
Brianna Adams followed with 2 innings of perfect relief, not allowing any hits or walks while recording four ground ball outs. Both pitchers combined for a shutout, and the second of the weekend over the Bulldogs.
Nicole Mergen led the Argonauts with her 10
th home run, scoring twice and driving in four runs on a grand slam.
Abigail Pippen contributed with two runs and two RBIs, adding a hit and a walk from the DP spot.
Hannah Harper recorded her fifth home run, driving in three runs with her sole hit.

West Florida opened the game with a strong first inning.
Miranda Harmon singled and advanced to third on an error during
Angelia Discenza's at-bat.
Abigail Pippen then singled up the middle, driving in Harmon. Following a walk to
Nicole Mergen,
Hannah Harper hit a three-run homer to right center, bringing in Pippen and Mergen. The Argonauts led 4-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, the Argonauts extended their lead.
Bella Holliday singled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Pippen. Mergen followed with a grand slam to left field, scoring
Meg Fountain, Discenza, and Pippen. The score stood at 9-0 after two innings, setting the stage for the run rule to come into effect by the fifth inning.
West Florida's pitching and defense held Union scoreless throughout the game, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second inning. Guffey and co. secured a decisive victory with a final score of 9-0.
