DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The No. 2 University of West Florida women's tennis team fell to No. 4 Nova Southeastern University with a final score of 2-4 on Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex in the preliminary round of the NCAA South Region Tournament. The Argonauts finish the season with a 23-5 record and brought home the first Gulf South Conference title since 2018.
West Florida secured the doubles point with wins on two courts. At No. 1 doubles,
Sandra Recuenco and
Carlota Verdu, ranked No. 5, defeated Nova Southeastern's top-ranked Kristyna Hranacova and Katja Markus decisively, 6-1. The No. 3 doubles pair,
Kylie Kochis and
Sophie Smith, also claimed victory for the Argonauts, overcoming Jana Boegner and Priscila Janikian 6-4. The match at No. 2 doubles was left unfinished with West Florida leading 5-4.
In singles action, Nova Southeastern responded strongly, beginning with a win at No. 1 singles where top-ranked Kristyna Hranacova defeated the No. 5 ranked
Carlota Verdu, 6-2, 6-0, evening the overall score. The Sharks continued their momentum as Chloe Henderson, ranked No. 27, secured a straight-set win at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 result over No. 33 ranked Ali Midori Da Silva.
West Florida found success at No. 5 singles, where
Alberte Joergensen emerged victorious over Jana Boegner, 7-6(2), 6-1. However, Nova Southeastern clinched the match with Amina Sagadiyeva's win at No. 6 singles, defeating No. 67 ranked
Sophie Smith, 7-6(4), 6-4. The final singles match completed saw Noemie Dadoun of the Sharks toppling
Guadalupe Martinez in a three-set battle, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, concluding the dual match with a final score of 4-2 in favor of Nova Southeastern.
