PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes against Gulf South Conference rival West Alabama at home on Sunday, and the UWF defense held on for a 2-1 win. With the win the Argonauts improved to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in GSC play, while the Tigers fell to 8-6, 5-3 GSC.
The first of the two early goals from UWF came from Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla.) at the 1:50 mark, as he scored his first goal of the year off an assist by Pablo Paz (San Jose, Costa Rica). The same combination connected again six minutes later, as Paz scored his third goal of the year off Chirinos' team-leading fourth assist. Paz's goal at the 7:43 mark proved to be the difference.
"To get two goals that early was a dream start for us," said UWF head coach Bill Elliott. "West Alabama is a good team full of a lot of experienced seniors. They got their way back into the game, which was no surprise to me. We were pleased to get that kind of result against a good team today."
The Argos limited UWA, the top-scoring team in the GSC, to one goal and six total shots. Evan Beutler scored in the 61st minute, but the UWF defense held strong the rest of the way to clinch the win.
West Florida finished ahead in the shot count 16-6, and the Argos also attempted five corner kicks compared to three for UWA. Goalkeeper Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) made three saves in goal for UWF, while Lavares Stone finished with seven saves for the Tigers.
Two weeks are left on the GSC schedule, and UWF holds the No. 5 spot in the conference standings with a 3-2-1 record. The Argos will finish the regular season with Delta State (4-9, 1-5), Mississippi College (8-5, 3-4) and Spring Hill (3-8, 2-4), in that order. That stretch begins at Delta State on Friday, Oct. 24, and kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
