UWF volleyball defeats UWA on senior night

West Florida defeats West Alabama 3-1 at home on Friday night

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team defeated Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 25-15) at home on Friday night. West Florida (20-6, 13-3 GSC) seniors Sarah Scott and KC Dobbins were honored before the match for their contributions to the UWF volleyball program.

Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) ended the night with 12 kills at a .364 clip and added three blocks in the win. Fellow senior KC Dobbins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Arkansas) had 23 assists, seven digs and a pair of service aces.

"KC and Scotty have given so much to this program," head coach Melissa Wolter said. "It was great to see them have good matches tonight. We got West Alabama's best game tonight and I think we are very fortunate to come away with this win."

UWF was led by sophomore Corisha Smith (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman HS) who tallied 13 kills at a .219 clip while fellow sophomores Cora Bidlack (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and Holly Mattmuller (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) each tallied 10 kills in the win.

West Florida started the match strong offensively and took the opening set 25-19 behind an impressive .447 team attacking percentage. UWF tallied 18 kills and only one error in the first set and held UWA to a .259 team attacking percentage. UWF freshman Katy Kuhlmeier (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) had four kills off nine swings at a .444 clip.

West Alabama responded in the second set and held West Florida to a .118 team attacking percentage as UWA took the second set 17-25. The Tigers posted a .440 team attacking percentage in the second set.

Both teams had offensive struggles in the third set as they combined for 15 errors. West Florida trailed 13-19 in the third set before UWF used a 4-0 run to cut the lead to two points. Down 19-22 late in the third set, the Argonauts ended the set on an impressive 7-2 run to take the set 26-24.

UWF would go on to take the fourth set by a decisive score of 25-15 as West Florida used a .351 team attacking percentage. UWF senior Sarah Scott capped off senior day with six kills off seven swings at a .714 clip in the final set.

West Florida will next play host to GSC opponent North Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. CT.
