ROME, Ga. – The No. 2-seeded University of West Florida volleyball fell to No. 3 Valdosta State 0-3 (24-26, 21-25, 22-25) on Saturday in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Semifinals. This will be the first time in seven years that West Florida will not be competing for a GSC Tournament Championship.
The No. 3 seed Valdosta State will face No. 4 seed North Alabama on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. ET in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship.
"This was going to be a great tournament long before any of us showed here in Rome," head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "It was everything everybody had hoped it would be; VSU just played great today. They played really good when the game was on the line and I attribute that to a lot of upper classmen that they had on the floor that just refused to give it up. I think we got rattled and played tight in moments when if you want to win those types of matches you can't do that."
West Florida was led offensively by senior
Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) with eight kills and four blocks. Freshman
Katy Kuhlmeier (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) added eight kills and two blocks while sophomore
Holly Mattmuller (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) added seven kills.
UWF junior
Colleen Starrs (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) led the team with 14 digs while senior
KC Dobbins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Arkansas) had a team-high 21 assists.
West Florida will be looking for an at-large bid to the NCAA South Regional Championship with the NCAA DII Volleyball selection show airing on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 9 p.m. CT.
